I love the University of Virginia but am concerned not being from Virginia or in a sorority
The majority of UVa women do not join a sorority.
For many decades, 1/3 of UVa undergrads have been from out of state. Among the 2/3rds Virginians, a high percentage are from families that are not native to Virginia. This occurs because the population of Northern Virginia is from all over the world, and because there are so many families with military backgrounds who have traveled their whole lives. The percentage of international students has greatly increased, with high numbers from S. Korea, China and other Asian countries. (UVa posts info on numbers and countries of origin.)
Thank you, I recently visited and was concerned if I didn’t join I wouldn’t have a social life. I appreciate your comments about VA
My children did not join Greek Organizations and are having a great experience. You do not have to be in a sorority to have an active social life:).
I would definitely not worry about that. There are literally a gazillion clubs and activities at UVA. The greeks there are a loud minority - but they are just that - a minority. Its around 30%. And no one cares if you are from Virginia or not. You can find people like you whether you are sport-y, into the arts, a foodie, a video game junkie, like hiking and are outdoors-y or whatever. Not a worry.
My one concern about UVA and UNC is that I wouldn’t fit in because I am Indian. How accepting of the minorities are the students?
Does anyone have any input for males and fraternities and social acceptance of the LGBT community?
As of a year ago, UVa had 115 undergrads from India and 127 grad/prof students from India. Additionally, many Virginia residents at UVa have a family background from India.
Stats for each country are at the link:

A large percentage of the students from Northern VA are South Asian. They are a large presence in the school system here and at VA universities.
Any information on LGBT community
my son and his gf both UVA, are not in the greek system and love it there. THere is a lot to do.
IS there social life revolve around parties only
There are over 900 student organizations at UVA. There are all kinds of events going on here. Google “UVA CIO” and click the first link to see the list. It’s huge.
