University of Virginia Transfer Chances

Hi everyone,

My name is James. I plan to apply to UVa for Fall 2012 admission as a transfer student in the College of Arts and Sciences. I'm currently a Virginia Community College student, but I will not be applying with guaranteed admission. I'm wondering what my chances are with my current academic record. I don't want to waste $60 applying if I don't even have a chance.

High school:
GPA: 3.8 unweighted, 4.1 weighted

Rank: 10/139

SAT: 600 Math, 600 Reading, 610 Writing
ACT: 32 Math, 26 Reading, 25 Writing (10 Essay), 25 Science

Academic Rigor: My school did not have any AP or IB courses. It was/is the lowest funded school in the state of Virginia, so it was impossible to hire a teacher qualified to teach the courses. I took every advanced/honors/dual credit course that was available to me. When I graduated I had over 25 credits towards an Associates Degree in Science.

ECs: BETA Club (3.7+ GPA), French Club, MACC, Talent Search, HOSA, and Vice President of Correspondence for FCCLA. My school mainly had agriculture related programs and that kind of thing never interested me, so I didn't join "Future Farmers of America" or "Woodshop Club."

In my last semester of high school, I applied to Virginia Tech and was accepted. I only attended Virginia Tech for one semester because my grandpa got very sick mid-Fall semester and I was forced to put college on hold. Because of this I didn't do as well as I could have in my Fall courses. I managed a 2.7 GPA even though I was having to go home for several days at a time to help take care of my grandfather. I have included a two page essay on the issue in my application to UVa.

Since Spring 2011 I have been enrolled at the community college that I got my dual credit through in high school. Those stats are below:

Wytheville Community College:

GPA: 3.65

Academic Program: Associates of Science

ECs/Honors: WCC Honor Roll, Will be Magna Cum Laude when I finish the degree, Member of the AMSA

Why I'm not applying guaranteed admission: I currently have 48 credits towards my degree. I lack only a few courses from attaining the degree needed for guaranteed admission. The problem is that one of the courses I need is not available for Spring 2012, so I'm not going to finish the Associates Degree this semester. I could finish the degree in the summer session, but the UVa-VCCS guaranteed admissions agreement and the transfer FAQ on the UVa website state that the degree must be finished in the Spring. I do not qualify to apply for guaranteed admissions unfortunately.

Recommendations: I have a very good teacher recommendation from my high school Anatomy and Physiology instructor. As I plan on going to medical school in the future, I feel that this will benefit me as I am planning on majoring in Biology.

Now for the fun part:

With all of this information, what would you say my chances are?

I don’t know if this will be beneficial or not, but I do have over 25 hours of Physician Shadowing Experience that I did over the summer.

Anyone have an opinion on the matter?

Why no guaranteed transfer?

I think that you have a pretty good shot at getting accepted. The only thing holding you back would be your first semester at tech, but as long as you explain it well, it may be acceptable.

I think you’ll be fine. You have decent test scores/college gpa. Good luck!

did you already apply to UVA in the past and get rejected? Or is this a first time application? Honestly based off your stats out of high school you probably would have had a decent shot as a freshman and they will still judge you off your act,sat and gpa from hs more still than your college credits

i’d say you have a decent shot at getting in

Honestly, looks like you have a good shot at getting in. Go for it!

samir634: I didn’t apply to UVa in high school. It was my first choice, but after I got my SAT scores back, I didn’t think I would get in. I checked the 2009 admissions statistics when I was thinking about applying and most of the students had the same GPA as me, but an SAT score 200-300 points above mine. I thought I would be a reach and didn’t want to waste money on an application fee.

Knights09: I can’t apply guaranteed admissions because I will lack two classes from finishing the degree in the spring. On the UVa transfer page, it states that the associates degree must be finished in the Spring semester prior to when you will attend UVa. Guaranteed admissions is only for Fall, so it is either apply without guaranteed admissions or wait another year. I would finish the degree in the summer semester, but it would already be too late.
