University of Virginia Vs. University of Michigan

Hi, I was recently accepted into both UVA and UMich and am trying to weigh the pros and cons of each school. At UVA, I would be in their biomedical engineering program, while at Michigan I would be completing the 5 year program with a BS in Cell and Molecular Biology and a MS in Biomedical engineering. I have visited Michigan, and am hoping to visit UVA soon. I’m interested in research, studying abroad, and internships. If anyone has any comments on either of the programs or the schools in general, it would be really appreciated! Thank you!

Are you in-state for either of them?

They are both great schools.

Both are great universities. Go with either, though I found UM to be more diverse. It is also a question of preferences. Ann Arbor is awesome if you like an eclectic, artsy city. UVA is beautiful in a classical way. Also, do you prefer snow or heat and humidity?

@whizkid98 No, I’m out of state for both :frowning:

@ekb1998 Then go where you think you will be happiest outside of academics. Both are fantastic schools for BME and actually as a current Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) major, I can assure you that the CMB program at UMich is fantastic too. So, because of that, now it’s a matter of choosing which environment you like better and where you think you will enjoy the next 4/5 years of your life more.

@ekb1998 UVA and Michigan both have good financial aid programs, including for OOS students. UVA does not distinguish between in state and out of state when making awards.

Assuming cost is not a concern, for a science/engineering major, I recommend Michigan.

If you are interested in undergrad research, Michigan is known for its very robust UROP and MRC programs.

“Also, do you prefer snow or heat and humidity?”

Virginia is not in the tropics.

Summers in Virginia at least can feel like the tropics. If you’re there during the school year you are only going to suffer a few months. I was surprised that most of the UVA dorms do not have air conditioning.

UVA is not nearly as diverse as Michigan. That said, it is working on it. If you visit both universities, you’ll also sense how different they are. It’s almost as if their physical planning and attributes affect the atmosphere. UVA Is planned and gorgeous. It feels very southern. UM Is eclectic, unplanned. Hard to describe but Michigan, to me, felt more relaxed.
