University of Washington: My one true goal

Hello folks,

First off, I'm brand new to these forums and already quite impressed at the wealth of information that's here (really beginning to like it!).
I know there may have already been many threads created by students in dire need of help making it to a particular university, but I really need student's and other people's advice and opinions more than ever.
The University of Washington, I have found, is a prime choice for students interested in pursuing medicine and who are on a pre-med academic course. Currently, I'm very serious about pursuing (and hopefully being admitted to) a medical school - in particular that of UW's. I'm currently attending the Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria and achieving a steady 3.5+. I've just got done with my first year, and I have fall and spring semesters left.

Out of all the universities I will apply to however, UW is really my #1 (and I think for good reason). Not only does it have a program I'm just fascinated with at the moment (Neurology!) but it also has an extremely good medical school attached with it. More importantly, the person I love most also currently goes there (a girlfriend of 3 years who I am very tight with). We live on opposite coasts right now and it's difficult holding a long-distance relationship (although we somehow pull it off). When I'm done with CC, we both want me to be together at UW.

So for my particular case I feel it is so important to do my best to make it there. I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice, concerning transfer rates and anything else that will increase my chances of getting there (sorry I don't have specifics!)

Any help will be greatly appreciated, since this is an urgent situation I can't afford to mess around with!

Bump, b/c I really need help with this!

I don’t think medical schools care that much about what your undergraduate school you went to. UW is probably not seen any differently than other schools of similar academic rigor.

Transfer priority goes first to in-state students from community colleges who have accrued 90+ credits, then to in-state cc students with <90 credits, then out-of-staters.

Heads up: You most likely will not hear back from them until mid-late June at the earliest. It might be wise to apply to Seattle U as a backup if you’re set on moving to Seattle.

If you have any other questions, let me know. I live less than five minutes from UW, I have a lot of friends who go there, and I’ve gone through the transfer app process.

Ah, thanks for the replies guys.

GoldFinch, I have some burning questions for you so I will make sure to PM you with them :)

Okay PM away. I’ll do my best to answer.

And keep in mind as regards med school admissions, the U of Washington gives priority not only to Washington State citizens, but to residents of Alaska, Idaho and Montana by means of an interstate compact. It is very hard for non-residents (and non compact member state residents) to gain admission to UWMed.

And getting back to undergrad admissions, the UW had to restrict transfer admissions in recent years. So unless things have improved, you would be way down the totem pole coming from out-of-state.

The best thing you can do is 1) apply now, just for the sake of it. Assuming you don’t get it 2) move to Washington and live here for a year without going to school in order to gain residency, 3) start at a community college here and get your AA. You’ll have a much better chance at being accepted.

Agree with the above posters that:

UW Med school doesn’t care where you do your UG and UW is no better or worse than any other school in the nation for premed coursework.

Other than WA residents and residents of WWAMI states, UW Med school only accepts a very few OOS students. See their website:

You cannot attain residency (for either for UG or Med school) while attending college in WA. It takes 1 yr to get residency for UG and 6 mo for Med school.

If you apply and are admitted as an OOS student, COA is 37-42k/yr; you won’t receive need based FA and there are minimal to no merit scholarships available to OOS transfers students.
