University of Washington Prestige

I'm looking into transferring to the University of Washington, and based on every bit of information I've been able to gather, it seems like a great school with an intelligent student body. However, I never see it talked about on this website. In fact, I did a search and hardly came up with anything.

So what do you guys think about the University of Washington? Is it respected? Prestigious? Crappy? I'd love to hear some personal opinions, and maybe some insiders scoop in case I do get accepted here.

The only reason it isn't mentioned much on CC is because it isn't top 25 lol. U of Washington is a phenomenal school in what looks like a great location (I'm assuming it's the Seattle campus) and, from looking on Google Earth, it's pretty close to downtown Seattle. I would say that it is very well respected and very prestigious. I myself wouldn't go there though because its way too big for my taste.

It's a premiere research school. It's undergrad just isn't as famous; thus you don't see much talk about it here.

I'll admit, the size is a bit of a turn off for me too, but I think I could adjust as long as I got involved.

What major are you doing? I know UW has a fabulous med school, it's ranked #1 in primary care and #6 in research. So if you're interested in something medicine related, then UW would be the place to be (so you can have a better shot of getting into it).

Oh yeah, I've heard only the best things about their medical school. I'm not really interested in medicine though. I'm undeclared right now, and I have no idea what I want to major though. I'm starting to pick up an interest in math though..but I'm just applying as a pre-major for arts/sciences. Something real general that I can swim around in ya know, haha.

U W is one of the flagships whose prestige and national recognition seems to be on the upswing in a major way (such as U MD).

The majority of students can no longer finish in four years because of the lack of available slots in courses. That is about to get much worse as their undergraduate budget is slashed more than 10% because of the state's budget crunch. (Tuition is going to rise in a major way as well.) Advising is close to non-existent. There is a faculty hiring freeze. Also a space crunch as many students who might have gone out-of-state will now apply to the U.

Like all good state universities, it has many excellent departments, with lots of faculty research.

You might not be looking at the right places. For its graduate programs in the biomedical sciences, it is one of the very best. This is the school that many of my coworkers applied to as their dream school.

Is this directed at me?

It's a solid school with a good reputation... just outside the top 10 public schools. I wouldn't call it prestigious for undergrad (a bit hard to do that when there's a ~65% acceptance rate) -- but for graduate studies (medicine and sciences, mostly), it's top tier. Still a gap between the Berkeley/Michigan/UVa/UCLA/UNC realm... but easily the best school in the Pacific NW.

For medical graduate studies I don't believe there is a gap between berkeley/U Mich etc., after all, isn't U of Washington rated 1st in primary care?

LOL. Berkeley doesn't even have a medical school. The OP was talking about an undergraduate transfer. Quality of medical schools should not even be a part of the discussion.

That's because it's called UCSF.

I'm applying to UW OOS as my safety and i really love it. The key to a good college list is to love each school from reach to safety and I can tell you that I have my safeties covered. UW is such a great school with so many resources and other benefits. I'm really surprised that my classmates weren't applying there, but instead applying to other safeties on the other side of the US in rural areas, when they could apply to UW and be in Seattle! I hope UW's prestige goes up over the next few years. My counselor told me UW is like the Berkeley of the Northwest (campus, student life/feel-wise, definitely not academically). Anyone care to comment on that?

Well then UCSF should be renamed UCBerkeley medical center/campus. Perhaps Berkeley can usurp UCDavis for a medical school. Or maybe UCLA or UCIrvine. If Cornell can have their medical school in NYC, I don't see why Cal can't have theirs 15 miles away. :-)

It's a good school, but budget cuts are hitting the U really, really hard, and even before that, students' ability to access courses necessary for graduation had been very compromised.

^

I guess it's all about priorities:

So in total, it's a three-year deal worth $2.1 million or obviously, $700,000 a year.

for an assistant football coach!

Oh, undergraduate. I got a little confused by the way he led into it ha.

So I'm from California, and the UC campuses are what I know best in terms of prestige etc. How would you rank the University of Washington in comparison to the UC campuses?
