University of Washington Prestige

"Perhaps Berkeley can usurp UCDavis for a medical school."

Actually, Davis used to be Berkeley's Ag. field outpost until it warranted its own institutional moniker.

So I'm from California, and the UC campuses are what I know best in terms of prestige etc. How would you rank the University of Washington in comparison to the UC campuses?

[/quote]

For undergraduate, probably right below UCSD and at/slightly above UCD/UCSB.

Not bad, not bad at all.

@ arcade fire: it depends what departments. UCSD's sciences are clearly better by far (even better than Cal's) but UW offers things UCSD doesn't have. UW has more athletic programs, a better on campus social scene (excluding mexico for UCSD, lol), and i feel like UW's liberal arts majors would be slightly better than UCSD's because SD's strengths are only its sciences. Still, both are great schools.

^ don't forget about UW's business school.

How is their business school?

My DH graduated from the UW with a BS in mathematics in '79, got accepted to grad school at many top schools, got his PhD in mathematics from MIT in '82 (yes, in three years; he was lucky enough to get focus on his thesis early) and has been a math prof at USC since '86. His read on the math dept at the UW is that they've lost some younger talent since the salary scales have not kept pace with UW's comparison public schools, but it is still tops for the PNW. You'd need to go further south down the coast to find better math departments (Berkeley, Stanford.)

Logic 101:

University of Washington = George Washington = 1st President = Very Prestigious

Unfortunately I never took logic 101 so I have no idea what you're talking about!

Agree with Calicartel in comparison to UC's. It reminds me of Cal and UCLA quite a few years ago when they weren't so ultra competative in admissions and academics but were still top schools. D is choosing the UW over Cal, UCLA and UCSD assuming she gets into one of them. The UW campus is one of the most beautiful we've been to on the westcoast. IMO UCLA has the most beautiful campus and location of the UCs. S goes there and it has everything, academics, location, weather, good recreation nearby, D! athletics, etc. The UW has it all as well except the weather but D wants a change so all is good. The only thing that concerns me is graduating in 4 because the OOS tuition with no fin aid isn't cheap.

UDub has a real good business program. The Foster School of Business is underrated but well regarded on the west coast. Accounting in particular is real strong, especially tax accounting. Being in Seattle is also a big plus for internship.

The business school is undergoing a major upgrade of its facilities, with the addition of two start-of-the-art buildings. The first building, PACCAR Hall, is scheduled to be completed in 2010; the second building in 2012.
PACCAR Hall

As an alum, I would add that the UW is very big, so there isn't much sense of community, you are pretty much on your own. And many of my classes were lectures- as in 100 plus kids in a class.

Hey, I'm a recent Cornell U. acceptee who is from a Seattle suburb so I've grown up with University of Washington. UW is definitely the school that all the top students in the state go to if they want to stay in state. The best way to describe it is a University of Michigan-lite. Big public school, great academics across the board, great social life and sports atmosphere in a temperate environment. If you want to stay and work in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest it is a perfect option! It's campus is great, right on the edge of Seattle, an awesome city! Microsoft is a huge recruiter.

Yeah, I live in Seattle too.
UW is a great school, with an absolutely beautiful campus in a great location.
It's 65% acceptance? Really? UW is actually kind of hard to get into now.
It's very unpredictable. But if you're above a 3.7 you'll probably get in.

In my experiences, it seems as if every high school kid in the East Side (suburb of Seattle) and the general area..just expects to go to UW. So, I'd assume you would face SOME competition. But, for the most part, the undergrad program is good, but no where near as good as other places. Its a respected college in the NW and would be a good choice overall for a solid student. The university is very big, but it has also tons of resources and a good food scene in my opinion. The Ave has a bunch of small little cafes and dining places and the main eating place, HUB or Husky Den, also has some good food. The campus in short is beautiful (I've seen people get married on campus by the fountain with mount ranier in the background). Also, it must be noted that...it is Seattle, thus it rains A LOT. Also, we got snow like 2 days ago? Anyways, UW is a good school.

Lies. It does not rain as much as people say. We just have clouds....
And our summers and springs are beautiful.
An inch of snow, and the whole city [including school] shuts down.

Cheriella please!!! Do not tell people that the rain in Seattle is not so bad. It only encourages them to move there. It's time to pull up the gangplank. Bring back 'Lesser Seattle.'

i've been there during the summer and it was beautiful! also had clear bright blue skies!

Haha. Oh yeah. I forgot the rain thing was only a rumor started by Seattlites to keep people from flocking into our great city. =]

I mean.... NO, SEATTLE SUCKS. Why would anyone want to live in a depressing rainy place... I mean, Kurt Cobain commited suicide here.....
