Hi. I'm applying to the University of Washington next week. Here are my stats:

GPA- 3.426
SAT CR- 600
SAT Math- 590
SAT Writing- 600
SAT Total- 1790
ACT Composite 1- 27
ACT Composite 2- 27
ACT Power score- 28

I come from a top high school in the Northern Virginia area (suburbs of Washington, DC) and it is ranked in the top 100 schools in the nation. My extracurricular activities are better than the average applicant, as I have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for four years, been on mission trips to Costa Rica with service and a spanish immersion program, volunteered in surgery at a local hospital, been on honor roll, and have worked with special olympics. I am also very good at writing essays.

With my grades (I know my GPA isn't the greatest, my mom had cancer freshman and sophomore years) do I have a reasonable chance of getting in? Seattle looks amazing, and I will be coming from out of state from a wealthy family capable of paying.

I've also applied to:

University of Colorado Boulder
University of Utah
University of Arizona
University of Oregon
University of California Santa Barbara
University of Wisconsin Madison

U of Washington shoould be mid-high match I think.

The admission for OOS students is much easier than it is for In state universities. For example, my friend got in U of Washington with much lower SAT score than you had. What’s your weighted GPA?

But are you willing to pay 48k? They give little aid to OOS.

My school district only does one GPA on the transcript, and mine is 3.426. I think that my OOS status should help me out. The school looks beautiful! I am looking at their biological science degrees, as I intended on a career in medicine or a physician-assistant program. My family is wealthy, and can afford the costs.

Last year I took AP US History, and AP English Lang & Comp. I scored a 5 on the APUSH exam and a 3 on the AP Lang exam. I also took Functions & Analytical Trigonometry, which is fully weighted.

This year I am currently taking AP Calculus AB, AP Biology, and AP US Government & Politics. I have three years of French, two years of Latin, and physics and chemistry.

I think you will have good chance, because my friend who got in U Dubb this year, had even lower score than you did.
Also less ECs with similar AP scores.

Thanks so much! I wish they had an early action/early notification period however… I will hear of my admission decision from Colorado around November 15th (my number one school with UW being a close second), and I don’t hear back from UW until March 15th…

You probably can get in, but it is a good thing your family can pay. You would not get much financial aid. UW is one of those state schools which likes to charge out of state students lots of money in order to keep from having to raise rates on in state students.

Hey there!
I just wanted to give my opinion, and say this: I am from Washington, and I can tell you that University of Arizona, UCSB, and UC-Boulder are all much better options for in terms of having a more enjoyable college experience. Seattle really IS amazing, but only during the summer…
I chose to attend UofA and it has been the best decision of my life - everyone is happy all the time here, and it is a wonderful school for academics (check the recent Times World University Rankings if you think it is just a party school). The same can be said for UCSB and CU-Boulder!
Good luck with applications!

UW–low reach–i heard that they’re getting harder and harder to get into, though im not applying.
University of Colorado Boulder–match!
University of Utah–??
University of Arizona–low match!
University of Oregon–low match!
University of California Santa Barbara–match
University of Wisconsin Madison–??

Your statistics are fairly low for a UW applicant. I had very similar, if not better statistics out of high school and did not get accepted (In-state). I believe that your out of state status will be a positive factor for you; also make sure that you have a well written essay!

Recently applied for Winter 2015 as a transfer to UW

My son had a similar unweighted GPA, but he took a full IB courseload augmented by some AP classes, and so his weighted GPA was over 4.0. He had a 31 ACT, and a 2060 SAT, with terrific “leadership” credentials in extracurricular activities and community service. He was waitlisted by UW-Seattle last year (we are from East Coast, also).

Actually, I think you meet the credentials. A group of my friends applied last year and their GPA AND SAT scores were terrible. It was below a 1500. If you lack in some areas, you can compensate it by improving other areas.

Your stats are great, but just a thing to note is that UW is really finnicky on GPA. Make sure you play up the other parts of your application because GPA appears to be the deciding factor a lot of the time for my friends that got in or rejected.

Good standardized test scores. Your transcript is kind of low however it shows that you were willing to sacrifice a couple of A’s for B’s and maybe a C in tougher classes. I think that admission officers will like the fact that you challenged yourself. Because you’re out of state, you would help diversify the student population. I think you have excellent chances at being admitted! Congrats!
