University of Washington, underrated?

Everyone at my school either doesn't know University of Washington, or thinks its an "average" school, and less prestigious than Virginia Tech. I got in with a 2.8 gpa, out of state as a pre science (computer science) major and it seems like it's pretty easy to get in? Anyways, don't want to jinx myself because I got like a D+ in my AP Comp Sci class (from a C+/B) and two C's last quarter (third), and will probably get 2-3 C's again for my final quarter. Is it possible/probably that my admissions get rescinded, even though my GPA was very low to begin with? The welcome letter says if I don't finish with a strong GPA it is their right to cancel my spot... Anyways, back to the original question, is U Washington underrated?

And a few misc. questions:
- Do U. Washington students go on to top graduate schools like Harvard, etc?
- Why is the average graduation rate so low? Seems like most finish after 6 years for their bachelor's degree....
- How does U. Washington compare to other public ivies like UVA, U Texas, etc?
- Is the campus as beautiful as my parents say it is?
- Dating scene? Does yellow fever plague the white, female student population?
- Does Seattle rain a lot?
- Skating (skateboarding) scene on campus? Lots of busts?

So, this is how I think about the UW (I'm a freshman here now). It's true that there are a good number of slackers, and a lots of mediocre or average students. But, if you really want to do well here, there are definitely the facilities for doing so. Upper-level classes in many of the disciplines are very good, and advisors will often let you take graduate-level classes, if you have the intelligence and motivation for them (I'm going to be taking a second-year graduate-level complex analysis class next year).

Also, as you might have heard, there are many opportunities for research on campus. Often, it's as easy as e-mailing a professor and asking whether you can work in their lab, or do research under them. E-mail me at drbott@u.washington.edu if you have any more questions.

About graduate schools - some do, yes, but not a lot. Again, it's largely those who have been very self-motivated, and some definitely do get into great graduate schools. For instance, my math TA will be going to Cambridge, a former TA for the math class I'll be taking next year went to MIT, an undergraduate in a research group I'm in will be going to Princeton, et cetera, et cetera.

Nothing person nchung6666, but I am surprised that they offered you admission as an OOS with only a 2.8 cumulative. I'm assuming that you had other things going for you....UW is changing their admission process from one that is less focused on the Admission Index.

As for your admissions being rescinded, you better contact someone in the admissions office about this. They're going to want a copy of your final high school transcript. The Cs and Ds do not look good.

It sounds like you have not even visited the campus.

Skateboarding scene-You see a lot of them in Red Square. I don't think I've ever seen campus police telling them to go skateboard elsewhere.
Rain-Yes, it does rain, but you need to realize that in terms of actual percipitation received Seattle gets less than some major cities on the East Coast. It tends to be gloomy often and drizzles alot. Summertime in Seattle is absolutely goregous...hardly any rain.

Yes, the campus is beautiful.
Last year's average admissions GPA was a 3.6 and I know of local kids rejected with a 3.7. Must have been your ability to pay out of state tuition or something else on your application that was worthy. It's a very large school with mostly young adults so you should be happy with some social element, but get your grades up.

Compared to other "public ivies?" UW is one of the better publics, definately. The other publics I'd put higher than UW-Seattle (not Bothell/Tacoma, those stink) are U-Wis, Chapel Hill, UVA, several Cali. I think UW is better than UT but eh, my preference.

UW has a large Asian scene haha. But it's not a plague -___-;; (I'm Asian) I believe the majority of people are still caucasian. But I guess the dating scene is ok? Doesn't seem much different from other schools.

Are the girls hot? HAHA. I had to ask.

as big as UW is, there are more hot girls than you can imagine. With that said, there are just as many not hot girls, and just as many average girls.

Campus is extremely nice (that's the only university campus I've seen) -- was there yesterday.
And it was raining! I'm extremely lucky to get into such a beautiful state where it's raining all the year! (no sarcasm I enjoy rain a lot)
