University of Washington v.s. University of Michigan for Computer Science/Computer Engineering Major

I’ve been accepted into both the University of Washington and the University of Michigan, both into the College of Engineering. As far as I know, for U Wash, CE is in the CoE and CS is in the College of Arts and Science, but I am not guaranteed into any of those (I’m only guaranteed an Engineering degree). For U Mich, major in CS/CE is basically guaranteed.

Here are some of factors for me to choose:

  • Job Opportunity, as I’m an international student, so finding a job in the U.S. can be crucial
  • Entrepreneurship opportunity, as I’m somewhat interested in this too
  • If I have the opportunity, I might want to study business in Grad school (if this would affect my decision???)
  • weather

Thank you!

If you think CS/CE is guaranteed at Michigan, go there. From what I understand, most students who are admitted to UW and later try to get into CS aren’t successful. I don’t know how easy it is to get into CE at UW.

A degree from either school looks good to employers and grad schools. More important than which school you went to for a job in the US is whether you can get an H-1B visa. That process is one, big lottery, although who knows what the rules will be in 4 years.

Agreed. Take the guaranteed route to your desired major at UMich.

They are peers in CS and engineering. In everything else, UMich is at least as good and generally better.

Thanks you guys for your reply! So regarding &H-1B visa, is it only by chance, or do other factors help increase my chance of getting it?

just wondering hubert322 since i want to do CS at UW in a few years how much do you know in the subject? Because I heard its really hard there to get in for CS/CE?
