I was waitlisted at the University of Washington and I am wondering what my chances are of obtaining admission realistically. My cumulative GPA is a 4.0 waited and a 3.8 unweighted. I have taken 5 AP classes, 2 honors. I received a 32 on my ACT and 1400 on my SAT.
I am a 4-year varsity athlete, 3-year yearbook editor in chief, the secretary of my class and a member of medical club, and FSA. I applied for graphic design originally but was planning on switching majors to something in the science field later on. What chances do I have of gaining admission? Is there a way I can appeal this decision to get a quicker answer?
Yes I will be appealing as well! It doesn’t hurt to do it
My D got waitlisted, too. I didn’t know you could appeal!
My son was waitlisted in 2015, there was a guide on here somewhere about appealing the waitlist and he followed it and received an acceptance letter April 25th!
it included:
A (humble)letter explaining great growth over his senior year and what he can contribute to UW. Including clubs and sports he is looking forward to participating in.
3 letters of recommendation, 2 from teachers and one from his employer. They were very detailed in regards to his learning style and personality.
An updated high school resume including all activities, sports and anything else relevant.
An updated transcript.
He sent this is 5 days after he had been notified of waitlist.
He did not at any point accept a position on the waitlist.
I did chat with a kid on here last year who had committed to the waitlist and that followed the above guidelines and he was pulled from the waitlist in April. I find it interesting that they say no one got in off the waitlist last year but if you research last years waitlist threads on here, clearly some appeals were accepted. Also, some were denied.
All that being said my son did not get into his major in engineering and for two years applied to several majors. As a Junior he finally got accepted into civil engineering and even received a grant.
His little sister (my middle D) got waitlisted last year 2017. She did not accept the waitlist or appeal. She committed to WSU.
His youngest sister (my Third) got admitted to UW this year but pre-major for business (kindof a deal breaker), we are still waiting to see if she gets into Foster.
If it is really your dream school and you are willing to work very hard for it, do the appeal. Like I told my son three years ago if this is really what you want than really put yourself out there. In retrospect I don’t think he did that with his original application. Its easy to feel over confident in your stats and crowds in a high school environment.
Good Luck!
I have nearly identical statistics to you, and am in-state. I understand it’s a holistic review, but I feel I am a very well rounded individual and have many strengths which would be applicable as a UW student, and I’m not sure what they thought was a negative in our applications. So I definitely will be appealing.
“You may find that colleges follow different practices in maintaining waitlists. For example, the UW does not rank within the waitlist. If spaces in the freshman class become available, waitlist decisions will be based on the information you provided in your application and the information you provide on the online form. Additional materials, such as transcripts and letters of recommendation, will not be considered.”
This is an excerpt from the email I got from UW concerning my waitlist status. Is it just me or do these statements seem very contradictory? If someone, preferably @UWadmissionstaff could explain, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. I accepted my place on the waitlist and am in the process of writing my appeal letter. :)>-
@djb2018 How did you not get in straight away to UW. Your ACT is out of UW’s range (which is 25 to 31). I am quite surprised that you got waitlisted. With that kind of test scores and extra curriculars, I expect you to get in straight away. I am also aiming for UW.
