Hey, I am from TN, and I am very interested in Waterloo's business program. I don't want to hear about why I should go to Queens or UWO; I know what I want, due to their huge co-op program... :) Anyway, how hard do you think it would be to get into the financial management and accounting program, which is apart of the Arts school. I know the engineering programs are intense, but what about entry to this? It doesen't say how hard it is to gain entry: Accounting and Financial Management

Ahhahhahaha Waterloo is definitely the one school you should never ever go to... UWO is better. I know you said you didn't want to hear about it, but haha. Anywho, who wouldn't get into UW anyway? Do you live near there?

I would but I only have a 3.2/91% cumulative average... I'm just now gathering schools I plan on applying to, but will UWO look at the 3.2 or the 91 average? I'm so used to the 4.0 scale, due to living in the states. Could I just say I have a 91 average, even though I have a 3.2/4.0? Also, which years do they look at? I'm now entering 11th grade, but I really want to ditch the US, so I getting kinda ahead of myself.

BTW: My schools grading scale is 94+ for an A; it's redic! So I always end up with high Bs, 91s and 92s which explains the high cum avg but low Gpa.

Canadian universities don't care what "A" is. And 91 is amazing in Canadian standards, mostly because Canadian schools are harder than US, but whatever... I don't know the application process for internationals, but in Canada, they only look at your top 6 grade 12 courses, so work hard in gr 12, really really hard, and you'll be fine for UWO.

You should be fine for Waterloo.
AFM is one of the more competitive majors there, but it's not too difficult to get in... I come from a GTA high school (admittedly with a gifted program), and we had over 10 people go into that major... some of them had ridiculous averages, but most were high-80s/low-90s. You will have to take some sort of timed "critical/creative thinking" evaluation for that program though, generally it's at the university during application time, but you can get an outside proctor to administer it. I think there are sample questions on their website.

I'm not sure how international applicants would be treated by the Waterloo admissions department though, but they get the same co-op experience (engineering departments that my mom and my friends' parents work at interview/hire internationals from Waterloo, I imagine it'd be the same for accounting).

okay, cool, I'm thinking about eliminating Waterloo... It's nice to know that I have a clean slate; I'm going to def try to pull a 4.0 these last 2 years.

I will definitely apply to:
Rotman
Ivey
Queens
Shulich
and maybe UBC and U of A

Any more? I would like to get into consulting and maybe even IB...

logically, for finance, it is best to stay round the Toronto area for internship opportunities so UofT, UWO, Queens are the best options...I don't know where york is

Canadian school admissions are almost entirely dependent on grades; some of the more competitive programs, such as AEO at UWO require additional things such as essays and recommendations.

For US students, SATs/ACTs become a factor as well.

For business, UCalgary's Haskayne School of Business is supposed to be pretty good as well. Top ones though are Ivey, Schulich, and Queens (not necessarily in that order)

IrishGuy, although Canadian schools only look at a limited number of Gr. 12 coursework for Ontario students, the process is different for U.S. students. They will look at your entire high school transcript and how it compares in your school profile, in addition to your SAT scores. I'm not familiar with that particular program at Waterloo, but I will say that Waterloo is not known for business, per se.

Western's in London, Ontario... approx. 1.5 - 2 hours from Toronto by car.
Queen's in Kingston, probably around an 1 - 1.5 hours from Toronto. (FYI, it's known for it's commerce program, which is essentially their undergrad business concentration)
Waterloo's in... well Waterloo. Again, about an hour away from Toronto. And assuming you're still looking at AFM, I'd say its accounting is stronger than it's business.

Wilfrid Laurier is very close to UWaterloo, also being in the city of Waterloo. I've heard good things about their business program, although I don't know much about it myself.

If you are a selfish jerk, it is the school for you. They'll waste your time and money while providing the most uninspiring student life experience.

If you are a borning pathetic lover of asians then this school should be #1 for you. Remember to bring your cellphone, video games and credit card.

Remember to leave your bookbag at the door and your wallet next to the till.

PS laurier has lower tuitition and you can do cross registration there there is a joint honours course there.

If you enroll in laurier you save funds.

PS western is a pretty good business school I was talking about UW.... but once again I've known different people from UWO.. so but I think there are less asians there.

Do note though UWO and UW are not the same school

UW = University of Waterloo (based in waterloo but it has a couple other campuses in the works)
UWO = University of Western Ontario (based in london ontario)

I wouldn't recommend UT Scarborough's campus either.

I don't know much about business in general but I am aware that (although you probably don't wanna hear this) UW isn't exactly famed for it's business programs. That being said I have a couple friends who have applied to the AFM and they're all more than qualified.

Generally I've found that Canadian universities tend to focus more on your marks. I applied to 4 schools and only 2 of them asked for any additional info. Waterloo's supplement was the most concise (bear in mind I didn't apply to Queen's or Western) and it was the only form that asked if there were any extenuating circumstances that affected my academic record. Cause I had something to say for that I really paid attention to whether or not the forms asked this.

Being from the US they're more likely to look at more things such as SATs and APs so that they get a feel for achievements in a standardized context. This goes along with your high school grades of course and probably a school profile too...

@loveduck: I'm a giftie too! Where do you go?

If you're looking into business programs, Ivey (at Western) is definitely one of the best programs in Canada. Queen's Commerce program is also excellent. I would say those two are your best bet. I might be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure Queen's Commerce is very hard to get into though, you need something like a 95.

Also keep in mind that when applying to Canadian universities, they only look at your grade 12 marks, so your GPA is basically irrelevant.

PS. Don't go to Scarborough. Unless you want to get shot.
