University of Waterloo Chances???

Hey, Waterloo is basically my dream school at the moment, but there might be a problem as far as the courses i have taken. ATM i will just list out my courses,

I want to get into the Computer Science program, preferably 5-year Joint Comp-Sci +Business /w Co-Op

11th
AP English
AP History
AP Computer Science
Algebra II
Spanish
Physics

12th
AP English
AP History
AP Pre-Calculus
AP Physics/Chemistry (Might take phys. or chem. undecided)
Spanish
AP Computer Science

EC's
Robotics Club (competed in competitions)
Polish Language School w/ Regency Test completed and college credits earned
Volunteer work at a Hospital (Over 300 hours)
A job at staples???(undecided if should put on application)

ACT Comprehensive Score-28
Will take Euclid Mathematics contest
My problem is that Waterloo posts AP Calculus /w Exam score of at least 4

I am wondering if even though i haven't taken AP Calc my senior year (Because of the curriculum i was not able to take Geometry freshman year), if they still might accept me based on my past grades (Assuming i get 4's on the other AP Tests). Also assuming my average for both years was ~91

Waterloo admissions gives these averages for acceptance:
https://uwaterloo.ca/engineering/future-undergraduate-students/application-process/admission-averages

and for engineering, even though Waterloo is a Canadian School, they still look for EC's on the AIF forms.

For any of those wondering, I would be an international student....just to make it clear. Went to school in US

Only 4 people have ever applied to Waterloo from my school before. 2 of which got in, and with an avg GPA of 3.17. Dunno if this means anything, but more facts the better?

Hope you can help! thanks

It is true that Waterloo weights 11th grade and 12th grade more heavily but this verdict assumes that you averaged 91 in 9th grade and 10th grade also.

U Waterloo CompE: Match

I did not have a great average Freshman and sophomore year;

86 Fresh
83 Soph

But i am prepared to buckle down and get a ~91 average junior and senior year

Regardless of grades 9 and 10, however, I am wondering how Waterloo would look at my application for Comp Sci if I didin’t take Calculus Senior Year

I was a bit lazy Fresh and Soph year because i didn’t realize the enormity of HighSchool grades ect…

I had a post on my Freshman and Soph grades, if you want to refer to it feel free :)

Thanks for the quick response,
–Nubix

want to bump this

the more responses, the merrier!!

Ah, I visited the school a few days ago. It’s beautiful there!
My brother goes to UWateroo and he tells me a decent amount about that school.
The thing is, you’re going into CS. Getting into CS or engineering for UWaterloo is difficult, because their programs are prestigious. My brother, who went to a rather crappy school but got top, probably high 90s grades and started programming when he was a sophomore, struggled at UWaterloo’s CS program and barely passed and got his degree. CS is a particularly competitive program, so they probably recommend mid 90s grades for CS and again for difficult engineering fields (such as systems engineering, if you ever look into it). ~91 may be just passing if a cutoff ever existed, but you are still taking pre-calculus. What is AP Pre-Calculus? They will know that isn’t a real AP, since it’s not approved on Collegeboard.

However, grades may depend on how good your school is are how strong your ECS are. So far, your GPA, test scores, and ECs are all weak for this school (or perhaps you didn’t elaborate on ECs?). I think UWaterloo would be a reach. Not sure what kind of reach, since we don’t have enough information. I have no idea how those other people got in.
Good luck!

U Waterloo CS: High match

Does Waterloo require ACT?

Chances are about zero. AP Calculus is an absolute requirement for admission (<a href=“Your admission requirements | Undergraduate Programs | University of Waterloo”>Your admission requirements | Undergraduate Programs | University of Waterloo). All first year courses assume a background knowledge of calculus.

SAT or ACT scores are required too.

Ok,

This is giving me alot of information, thanks guys!

Since I AP Calculus is such a requirement,

I talked to my guidance counselor today, and it is still possible for me to take Calculus in my Senior year

I will have to attend a summer program, or study on the side and take a pre-calc final at the end of my junior year
Guidance said that with my school’s curriculum, Algebra II and Pre-Calc are similiar, so i should not have much trouble getting into Calculus my senior year

How will U of Waterloo look at this? will they even look at the summer course?

assuming i get good grades in Algebra II and Calculus, will it matter much that i took a summer Pre-Calc course?

Why we Chinese students do not need to hand act scores?

^^Those are good questions that only they can answer. If you contact mathinfo@uwaterloo.ca directly with your situation and questions, they will probably give you specific advice.
