I have been searching for good engineering colleges and I liked u of w and u of m. I was wondering which is better for undergrad engineering and which is better in general.

Also which is colder?

Minn is colder. UW is better all around…

Depends on what time of engineering your looking at. Minnesota is located in an urban environment while Wisconsin is more of a suburban environment. The Twin Cities is a hotspot for jobs so in job placement I would give the edge to Minnesota. However, the overall reputation of Wisconsin is probably better than that of Minnesota’s. Wisconsin’s social scene is also crazy so if your into partying and stuff like that Wisconsin has a ton of it.

If you want to work outside Minn, UW has better placement.

Minnesota has the tunnels so i would say it wouldn’t be as cold.

Minnesota is a top 3 school for Chemical Engineering (likely because of 3M being based nearby), but otherwise Wisconsin has a better reputation for engineering and as a whole.

What @kkmmdd said (I was just about to post the same thing). Are you from one of those states? They have tuition reciprocity, so you pay in-state tuition at either if you live in one of those two states. Otherwise, U of MN-TC is cheaper for OOS students.

@intparent:

For now. There’s chatter about UM-TC raising OOS tuition to the Big10 average.

However, the Gold National scholarship would guarantee you in-state tuition if you get it.

I live in MN. They have been chattering for several years about this, but it is still pretty low. You might find it raised by the end of 4 years, but likely would still pay less than at UW. I would still go with Wisconsin if you can afford it unless you are looking at Chem E.

Wisconsin Chem E is also Top 10 so any difference is trivial.

Yeah, I would say choose UM-TC only if you want to live/work in MN (especially the Twin Cities). UW-Madison can get you a job there as well, but (if your family doesn’t live in MN) actually physically being there makes it easier to look for jobs & internships there.
