I recently started looking into University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I don't really know much about it. Has anyone went there or known someone who went there? Is it a good school? How's the honors program? Are the professors easy to talk to? I'm interested in their social work program. Does anyone know how good it is? Do they offer a lot of service opportunities or service learning? What's student life like? Do they offer a lot of merit aid or financial aid? If anyone can answer any of these questions, that would be great. Thanks!!

A bunch of kids from my high school go there. It’s known as the one of the ‘worst’ state schools in Wisconsin–meaning that kids who couldn’t get into Madison, Eau Claire, or La Crosse generally end up there. While I’m sure some of its students are intelligent and motivated, most of the people I know who go there are the exact opposite. That is, kids who feel like they should go to college but aren’t willing to put in the effort required to do well.

It is also located in a pretty rough part of Milwaukee–walk a block or two off campus at night and you’re in trouble.

I’ve worked at UWM for 10 years and my son is going to start his junior year in the Honors College (which he enjoys greatly) this fall. And even though I do NOT get a break on tuition, I think UWM is a great place to earn an education.

Students who attend UWM typically say they enjoy being part of a diverse community and like being in a big city (by Wisconsin standards) with its numerous cultural attractions. Because you’re interested in social work, you might be especially interested in its 10 reasons why you should become part of that school:

Thank you Chapman Hall. UWM is in the upper tier of public universities in Wisconsin which include the flagship- Madison, and Eau Claire, Stevens Point and La Crosse. Some people choose Milwaukee over Madison because of the availability of certain programs at UWM but not at Madison eg. Architecture. UWM lacks a campus feel but it is in a city that has a lot to offer. I believe they call New York City, “The Milwaukee of the East Coast”.

If I were looking into social work, I would really strongly consider Madison over Milwaukee. Madison has a well regarded social work program and since it is located in the state capital, I would imagine there would be more internship opportunities.

Sorry to say it, but there are only three really good universities in the Wisconsin system.
