Anyone familiar with the university park airport? How long is it from the campus and how much do the tickets (say to NY) usually cost?

I am trying to find an alternative for taking a bus during breaks. Train service (amtrak) is too far from state college, so it isn't feasible for me since I don't drive.

The airport is a short cab ride from campus (5 miles?).
Check Expedia for flight options and prices. The fares are never cheap.

frasifrasi - You don't like the deluxe dragon buses?

my experiences with greyhound were horrible (~8 hours ride with numerous stops and transfers). Lil, do you know if the dragon goes straight to chinatown? Have you taken them before?

frasifrasi - I took the dragon bus to FTCAP back in May. I also took the dragon bus here for summer session (also, when I visited home last weekend). The price is $35 one way and lasts about 4 hours (sometimes 4 1/2 hours depending on the traffic, but never over). The bus does go to chinatown (I live there). It stops on Lafeyette Street (near Grand and Canal) and goes write to Walmart on N. Atherton. Im just curious, how much does Greyhoud cost?

By the way, how did you manage to carry all your luggage when there are so many transfers?

The greyhound goes from the station on atherton st. to port authority and costs about $36. Say, the chinatown one goes directly to NY with no stops?
Are the buses usually filled to capacity? I still have to take a subway to my house, do you happen to know if there is a station near the place twhere he dragon stops?

Back on spring break, I took the greyhound around 6:00 pm (scheduled departure was 5:00 pm) and arrived at port authority 2:00 am!

I only had a large suitcase with me and next time plan on only carrying a bookbag with clothes to avoid the hassle. You brought all your stuff for summer session with you on the bus ?!!?!!?

The dragon bus do not fill to capacity. On average, about 10-15 people ride it each time. You can take up 5 seats for yourself if you like. Trains stop on Canal Street (N,Q,R,W,J,M,Z,4,5,6); which is 1 street from the dragon stop. The A,C,E train also stops on Canal Street but it's a little further down (about 5-6 streets). Yes, I brought all my stuff for summer session on the bus. I had 5 bags in total.

Great, I guess I may take that one from now on. And it goes straight from State college to NY? isn't walmart a little far from campus, though (using old main as a point of reference)?

lil_killer, I am surprised you moved in by yourself! your parents couldn't bring you? are you bringing more stuff for the fall?

Yes, it goes straight form State College to NY with NO stops depending on the driver. The driver may take a 5-10 minute break to refuel/stretch his legs, however, you will still reach State College/NYC in 4-4.5 hours.

Well, I'm poor. So my parents don't have a car. I will probably bring more clothes for the Fall since it'll be more cold.

You could also mail some stuff to yourself. By now you should have your fall housing assignment, so you could send some boxes of stuff in between the end of summer session and the beginning of fall session. You could also store some of it (although at your own risk:

frasifrasi- - You're only going to bring a bookbag? Is your room really empty?

ahah, only for breaks. My parents rent a car to drive me there and back to NY during move in/out. Kudos to you for taking the ordeal by yourself, though. Some of my friends (asian also) going to SUNY are doing the same--tough coming from lower class working families.
