I searched CC but couldn't find any mention of it. Anyone have any experience with them? How convenient is this area getting to campus, etc.? Looking to get a 2br.

… what’s wrong with Shattuck? Especially North Berkeley Shattuck? O_o

It’s a little further away from campus than the Telegraph side, but (IMHO) it’s safer, prettier and more convenient to everything else. I am 100% biased, though: I lived the last two years on Shattuck x Center (and 6 months on College Ave.).

I don’t know anything about University Park, but I walk by it pretty frequently. It’s in a nice part of town very close to the Gourmet Ghetto (Cheeseboard, Chez Panisse, etc – also Andronico’s and Safeway). Several bus lines run down Shattuck toward campus and downtown. It’s about a 15-20 minute walk to campus.

Well it’s definitely a much cleaner and safer area than southside. It’s close to safeway and the gourmet ghetto. It’s convenient to live right next to the university if you have to be on campus frequently (lots of classes, student clubs, library, friends). But if you just have a few lectures and maybe a lab and never stay on campus, then IMO it is better to live away from the campus area. Besides, it took me 30 min by bus to get to high school, so for college, of course I’ll endure a short commute.
I personally haven’t rented from University Park Apartments, but if price is a concern, they seem a bit overpriced. You could try finding a good property management company (b/c there are really bad ones too) and looking at their listings, because landlords could be a bit unpredictable. But be sure to do some good research (read reviews online, etc.) on the property management company though.
But look around north berkeley, b/c south of berkeley (south of shattuck which I believe 88888888 was referring to) is pretty sketchy.

hmm im not sure … but the shattuck towards oakland is… hm i dunno. dont wanna live there. north side is very nice. like north gate north. and foothill areas. but not enough $

Price isn’t my main concern but rather living conditions and good/responsive management. I’ve heard quite a lot of negative stuff about many apartment complexes in Berkeley so it’s been difficult to find a good match. University Park Apartments didn’t seem to have any negative things said about it on other sites but I just wanted to make sure by asking any CC’ers if they’ve rented from them. Do you have any other suggestions of well managed 2br apartments near campus?

I literally lived around the block from that apartment complex on Shattuck. IMO, that was easily the best neighborhood I lived in at Cal, especially for the walking type. Getting to Southside is rather inconvenient (especially if you have a lot of friends in that area), but I usually saved those trips for when I’m already on campus. Northside-Gourmet Ghetto is pretty awesome, safe, and convenient. To the middle of campus is a 15-minute walk, to BART is 7-8 minutes, to Andronico’s is 5 minutes, Safeway is 8 minutes. Great eateries in the area for the student, including Oscar’s, Barney’s, Cheeseboard, Gregoire’s, etc; plus all the restaurants and shops in Downtown Berkeley are more accessible from here than if you were coming from Southside (especially walking through the poorly-lit section around Fulton). To add, if you need to get to the southeast corner of campus for morning classes (like the Business and Law Schools, Wurster, etc.), it can be a pretty long walk (25 minutes). The best part, though, is having a nice downhill walk towards the setting the sun when you walk home, certainly lifts your spirits after a long day.

I walk by it everyday! While I’ve never lived/dealt there, it seems clean (from the outside), I mostly see students entering/leaving, and there’s no shady activity. The prices seem fairly standard-to-high for 1 bdrm (out of my reach!). It’s in North Berkeley which is great and that’s pretty close to campus: around 10 minute walk.
