How are the dorms in University Park? Is there cable tv/digital cable in the dorms. How about the Ethernet in the dorms, is it in the dorms? What dorms are bad or good? Just wondering.

The dorms do have cable TV not sure if it is digital or just analog cable. There is ethernet (cat 5) cable hookup for internet. The dorms at PSU are old and institutional looking like many schools.

My oldest son was in east halls (Tener) last year. When I took him up as a freshman I was suprised that the dorms had not changed, renovated or improved, since I was a student there in the early 1980’s.

Every room has a microwave/fridge/freezer unit, ethernet and phone jacks for each person, one cable jack. Each person gets a closet, desk, and bed. East halls are basically only for first-years, and no one wants to spend money to renovate them because of that. They aren’t really that bad, but they’re far away from almost everything except the AgSci buildings, the arboretum, and Beaver Stadium. Definitely request a special living option that isn’t in East, and double check your preferences before the change deadline. I got stuck in Tener in East instead of Simmons or Atherton in South and have to wait at least until January to move. Almost all special living options guarantee you housing in following years as long as you participate and pay your dues, so that’s something to think about too.

Before I came here, I only heard bad things about East halls. I’m here now and its not bad at all. Except for no wireless. The setup, (at least in Pinchot) is pretty good. I really like how next to each bed are cubby like things with a shelf. I like the set up. Location is another story.

i thought that guy was annoying, but that website is actually pretty helpful. just my two cents.

If you ask 100 students about the dorms, you’d probably get 100 different opinions :-)

A lot of people don’t like East because of the location and the noise/partying. We hated East, so our second son specifically requested non-East dorms.

Some people like South because it is so close to downtown, while other kids like the dining commons in certain dorms better.

There’s no wireless internet in the dorms, but so far our sons haven’t had any problems with the Ethernet service, and they use their computers and online game systems quite a bit.

@bahamut277. You mentioned moving in January. What is the procedure for doing this?

I called housing enquiring about this and was told that this is not possible.

I don’t really know how it works. I talked to the coordinator of a hall and she said it might be possible for me to move if spaces open up in the spring from people going abroad or doing co-op/internships away from State College. I think it’s a special case though since Simmons and Atherton are honors housing. If there’s a specific SLO you want, I’d talk to the coordinator of that building. I’ve heard housing is a bureaucracy and it’s hard to get what you want, but when I met with the coordinator of Atherton she was really helpful.

You can also check the room switch eboard on eliving to see if anyone is interested in moving into your area and then contact them about a switch.
