University requirements!

Hey! I am currently in my junior year and we were told to be finalising our university choices

My IB points are 35/42 on my transcript (I haven't received my predicted scores yet).
I will be giving my ACT's in September but my diagnostic scores are about 29 - 30. I want to do Pre-Med

My extracurriculars:
Worked in three hospitals
Passed level 3 exams from the Trinity college
K9 Friends
Learnt dancing since 10 years
President of a jewellery design club
Production manager for school plays

The universities I am looking at are:
Univerisity of Michigan
University of Rochester
University of Massachusetts (For UMASS, I know Amherst is the best but which is the next good UMASS campus? )
Grinnell college
Eckerd college (My backup)

What IB points would I need to get into these? And how hard is it to get in?

Thankyou So much!

I am not familiar with IB standards but a 29-30 ACT would make Rochester and Michigan (if OOS) reaches.

As for UMass, the Boston, Dartmouth and Lowell campuses are commuter schools for locals and not very highly regarded, even in Massachusetts.

What is it you like about the schools you’ve chosen? You seem to have a wide variety…

In general, for pre-med, I recommend picking a school where you’d be in the top 25% stats-wise of entering freshmen. This guarantees nothing, as you’ll still have to put in the work to get a high GPA, but it will put you among or slightly above similarly talented students (testing-wise). IME, that can be helpful. You don’t want to be struggling in your classes or pre-med will be out. A challenge is good. A struggle is not. You CAN get to med school from pretty much ANY college out there (accredited colleges anyway). What you need is a high GPA and a good score on the MCAT.

It might be wise to go to the search engine on here and put in your (likely) stats along with your GPA - then click on the “want merit aid” box (you might not need merit aid, but it will sift for that top 25%) and see if any schools you like come up. Eckerd should be there. UMass may be too. Then find some others.

It’s not acceptances you are after - it’s a class where you can do really well. This could still happen at a reach, but having seen oodles of high school grads go on to various schools, I’ve seen far more drop out of pre-med when overmatched than stay in it - due to grades.

I have a son who’s doing superb at U Roc - it’s a great school and he loves it there, but his stats were considerably higher going in. He still works (studies hard) for his top GPA. I’d hesitate to recommend it in your situation if you want pre-med.

Your EC’s are terrific… You don’t want to be derailed by being in the “wrong” race.

Just my two cents - leave it on the floor if you prefer.

One other aspect for suggestions of schools - how much can your family afford?

These were the universities my school counsellor suggested for my scores! Michigan is my choice but i’m thinking about the other one’s as well.

I don’t quiet understand what you mean by 25% stats.
With regards to my EC’s, the university want to see versatility and consistency. The activities I listed; I have been doing them since a long time!

-tomofboston

Thank You for your help :)

What state do you live in ?What is your estimated family contribution ? For pre-med, choose low cost Universities like Iowa State, SUNY Stony Brook, University of Minnesota.

University of Michigan is ridiculously expensive for out of state (40k tuition). I suggest not attending it unless you get some money to drive the cost down. You need to save up for med-school.

After Amherst, Lowell is the best.

As far as the cost is concerned, my family is in good state. I don’t live in the US. I am an international applicant.

Do you know how many points I would require for Amherst?

And also for grinnell and Michigan!

Thank You :)

The mid 50% ACT for UMich is 29-33 last year. You better get 31-33 for a Match.

WOW 31? Okay! Will 36 IB score be good?

What about the IB scores and ACT for umass Amherst?
