University Scholars Program Replacement??

I am emailing my Northeastern counselor as we speak! Will fill in when she replies.

@Jpgranier , I know that NEU uses the NU In program to mess with the ranking system, but I don’t see anything inherently bad about the program itself. Freshman year classes tend not to be the most important in the greater scheme of things (they aren’t specialized and tend to be just the basic requirements everyone is eager to get out of the way), or at least that’s how I see it. I’d much rather go abroad and do my own thing

I do hope they add some kind of full tuition program… and that I get accepted to it. Haha…

If you get placed in the NU in program, you wouldn’t receive a full tuition scholarship. They’re not satisfied enough with your stats (hypothetically), so there’s no way you would receive their most competitive scholarship.

I also hope there program is put in!

I wish I researched deeper… I thought that the TORCH and University Scholars Program were opportunities for a full tuition scholarship. I simply cant afford the school even if they were to give me 25k a year (the max non-NMF kids receive) :’(

No, there’s an option on the Common App that asks you if you’d like to be considered for NU In. If so, there’s another option that asks whether you prefer fall admission or NU In. I could be wrong, but from my understanding it’s not just for kids not good enough to get in regularly, but also for anyone who might be attracted by the program.

The NUin program has financial considerations also - study abroad does not allow for the same financial aid options

Sigh

The highest merit we saw this year (excluding NMS) was 28K. Look at the results thread from mid-December

28k? Isn’t that basically the same amount one would get with NMS?

Thank you for the response, by the way.

@TeenPhilosopher, NUin for fall admits is for students with lower stats. However, it has become a popular program and this Spring is the first time they have offered a limited NUin program for currently enrolled students who might want a structured study abroad program for particular majors their freshman year. But these are kids already enrolled and who did their first Fall semester at NU.

Do you think it’ll affect my application if I put I’d prefer NU In?

@TeenPhilosopher: don’t ask for Nu.in if you are looking for Merit or need-based aid. The NU.in program is administered through the College of professional studies at NEU and your aid and loans do not cover the cost of traveling and tuition abroad which is close to 36K. If you are really keen on study abroad there are several opportunities later.

Also, there are a lot of gaps in the courses offered while abroad (location dependent) and with the 15 AP classes you have you may not find a class advanced enough to study abroad and successfully transfer those credits back to NU For example if you are getting credit for AP Calc BC you may not find a location that will offer you Calc 3 for you to transfer back and you will have backlog of classes you will need to make up in a short time. It sounds fun, but it has consequences for someone looking to save money and time

in fact, you are not a matriculating student of NEU till the spring term. essentially making you a spring admit.

Oh. Well… whoops. :frowning: Will I still be considered for both NEU regular and NU.in? Or should I email the admissions office?

A huge thanks to everyone for helping me understand NEU’s programs and financial aid workings; it’s greatly appreciated.
