Hey everyone, I'm a rising senior and will be applying to WUSTL, I was wondering if anyone knew about the University Scholars Program in which, along with your normal application, you submit a second application and if accepted, you are funneled into their medical school (with minimum GPA and MCAT scores). I'm looking at pre med for undergrad and was wondering how competitive it is to get into these programs. Also was wondering how important/helpful being in one of these programs is (I know Northwestern has a similar program). Just please let me know your thoughts in general.

They only accept a couple of people a year, and if you manage to get the minimum stats required, you could pretty much get into any med school (although Wash U has a top med school).

General consensus is it’s nothing special.

So you wouldn’t make acceptance into the program a major factor in deciding where to go?

Maybe if you got in, but again several hundred people apply for 1-3 spots. Then you have to maintain top stats that could get you into a med school of your choice which seems like way too much pressure.

The requirements of the program sound ridiculous. If you can get make 3.8 and 36 MCAT, then you could easily get into a medical school.

I know someone in it right now :P. She hasn’t said anything in particular about the program to me though, other than that she’s in it (and she’s a rising senior). She’s told me a lot about other things at WashU, so make of that what you will.

I really want to know more about this too. I just got an application for it in the mail. However, it seems like the accept more than 3 people… but then again, I know nothing more about it than the information provided in the application packet.

If anyone has some good info, please post :D

The acceptance rate for this program is less than !%. Unless you have stellar essays and amazing health-related extracurriculars, you will not be accepted. I am applying, but with mediocre performance, it’s very much out of reach. But who knows? Maybe everyone else gave up hope and only a few applied this year…

just to clear things up - I am currently in the USP program. There are a lot more perks than simply the medical school admission. In addition, if you are accepted into the program you are never “kicked out” even if your GPA and MCAT scores do not match the requirements. The med school wants you - that is why you are in the program - and they will work with you to get you there.

In terms of the acceptance rate - yes, it’s low. You might as well try for it, though. You most likely don’t know what they’re looking for. I wouldn’t call my extracurriculars extremely health-related. I was passionate about them - that’s for sure, but they the connection between what I did and medicine was not so readily apparent. You never know until you apply.

Applying to the program and getting in has completely shaped my college experience for the better. USP is amazing!
