University Scholarships?

I was wondering if anyone had been named a University Scholar and how much money they received. For those unfamiliar, University Scholars https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/costs/scholarships.shtml.

Thanks

In addition to being the rep here, I am also a student and received a University scholarship when I was admitted. University scholarships are $10k/year (spread out quarterly, so I receive $3,333 off my tuition/room and board bill every quarter, and an extra dollar off in Spring) and good for all four years as long as you maintain a GPA above 1.75.

And you get an extra $1k/year ($2k if you qualify for FA) for National Merit.

What I want to know is if anyone here got the College Honor Scholarship that gives FULL tuition to “a handful” of students. Considering the quality of Chicago students, I’m having trouble imagining just what “highly qualified” means. Is this the scholarship that was mentioned in the Gatekeepers that basically nobody ever turns down?

anything one can do to increase the likelihood of receiving one of these merit scholarships?

PBush- I have met one person on campus with the full tuition scholarship, and she is about as outstanding as a person as it gets— incredibly intelligent, fun, witty, and generally a great person to have here.

carmenelectra- check the box that says “I want to be considered for merit scholarships”, and be yourself on your application! You are welcome to send in supplements, but keep in mind not to overdo it, and that they are absolutely not required. Supplements like an art portfolio, a research abstract, a CD of you playing your instrument, etc are useful if you are truly passionate about that portion of your life- but please don’t feel the need to cobble together something just for the purpose of having a supplement, especially if it’s not something you’re truly passionate about. For example, I am a cellist, and sent in a recording of a live performance at a state competition where I did well- not professionally done, and not terribly long (under 10 mins), but representative of my skill.

I received a letter (well, a folder) today saying that I’ve been awarded 5k a year as a University Scholar.

I’m slightly mystified - I don’t think I’m that amazing :

I received a letter/folder today too! (for a University Scholarship) I was so surprised-- I definitely wasn’t expecting something like that because I didn’t know about the scholarships. Does anyone know how many there are/how they decide who gets one? Mine was 10k. I don’t think I’m that amazing either, lol.

Can all scholarship recipients post their stats?

Congratulations. I don’t think they normally do it this early.

Anyone who gets admitted to CalTech, MIT & UChicago IS amazing and deserves to be recognized as a University Scholar.

Congrats book_worm and Wisteria6872!

$5k/year scholarships? I don’t think they have had those up until this year. Perhaps they are giving more of them out this year.

In any case, congratulations.

Congrats. Contrary to what you guys think about yourselves, I’m sure you guys are actually amazing.

Great job, guys! Yes, we have sent out scholarship notifications to EA students, and have added a 5k/year level to the University Scholarship as well. RD applicants who are awarded a scholarship will find out with their regular decision admissions notification.

Do the merit-based scholarships just stack on top of the previously offered need-based financial aid?

silverturtle: Yes. Regardless of how much aid you receive, the university scholarship is added onto that amount.

They seem to be working on yield and the $5k this early might just tip the balance in Chicago’s favor (they could always add another $5k if further tipping is needed?)

^ I agree. This is about yield. My son just received notice that he has received the $5000 merit scholarship and he was very excited about it. I don’t really think $5000 is all that much for a school that costs over $50,000, but for my son it was more about “Boy I guess they really want me to go to UChicago!”

This is great because if the other two school he applied to don’t pan out, this is where he is going. I am glad he is getting attached to the idea of being there.

When were the scholarship letters mailed out? If one did not get a mailing does it mean that the student has not been considered for a scholarship?

I second meazewanderer. I haven’t received a letter. Does that mean I haven’t gotten one?
