any suggestions? psychology, theology, philo... one of the 3 i want to make my university seminar... i'm going to be taking all 3 on my schedule freshman year it's just a matter of which one to make my seminar...

i dont know if theyre doing it the same way this year, but dont they ask for four choices in order of preference for that class?

how much work is freshman seminar? D's suggested schedule for her major is math (she did AP Calc last year so calc III is probably where she will start), physics, chemistry...plus and elective and seminar. That seems like a pretty heavy class load for a first semester freshman because both chem and physics have labs and math probably has some sort of recitation or tutorial requirement outside of lecture, right?

I would suggest taking a university requirement such as Philosophy/Theology or a History/Social Science if you don't have credit for it.

Mombot, hate to say it, but that seems pretty standard for an engineer. The only thing that throws me off a bit is physics and chem the same semester - I haven't heard of that. Your best bet is to check with her advisor.

Unless things have changed (I've heard that they totally changed freshman chemistry around) from last year, engineers take chemistry both semesters first year and physics second semester first year and first semester sophomore year.

Son just finished freshman eng. year--yes, physics and chem do occur in the same semester! However, it happened during spring sem. And, the chem did not have a lab, only the physics had a lab and from what I can remember, the physics lab only met every other week. But, it was a very difficult semester, a physics, a chem and a calc with an intro to eng and an A & L course along with the req. P.E. He survived tho--and I think, will have the
2nd physics, a calc, two eng. courses, and another theo this fall. I have to agree that the physics and chem, along with the calc in one semester is a killer. He was pretty exhausted most of spring semester!

If she can defer some of the misery to 2nd semester I think that will be fine-she can do it, but I want her to keep in mind that 1st semester there will be a lot of other things going on--adjusting to dorm life with all of its noise and lack of privacy, establishing friendships, and um..what else do they do in South Bend in the fall?

That would be football.

:-)

lol september 1st!! georgia tech!!! i think i'll be there if nothin else is going on... we'll play it by ear :)

I'm pretty sure nothing else goes on during the football games. I'll definitely be there.

My roommate this past year was a math major and had the same schedule that was advised to your daughter. In the first semester, she was in Calc III, Physics and Chem (both with labs), History and a Lit Seminar. As a business major I personally would've gone crazy with all that science but she seemed to manage fine.
