So I figured that I should probably start thinking about classes and I looked at the list of University Seminars, but there were so many that interested me!

Can any current ND student give some insight into which seminar(s) they took and whether they would recommend them?

I’ve heard they have some reviews of classes/teachers at ndtoday.com . Maybe check there? Mind you, I’ve never used it and I’m not going to college yet so quote me on nothing. :P

Yup you can use ndtoday.com … seminars are all dependent on the professor…the most interesting topic can be brutal with an awful professor … research professors not subject matter.

I registered like half a week ago; this year at least, it’s four. They have the page with all the seminars organized by subject and listing the professors (makes using ndtoday easy and VERY helpful).

I have a question for any current students; how likely is it to receive a placement with your first choice? Your fourth? Is #4 like a fall back in an unlikely situation, or do people get it all the time? I like the subjects for all of the seminars I chose, but the first three professors seemed really good, while the fourth had a general consensus that she was just “okay.”

Thanks everyone, I submitted my registration today (ndtoday was a big help!)

Anyway, when reading ndtoday, I saw something about someone not getting into a class because of “DART times”. Does this apply to incoming freshmen and should I be concerned about getting into my choices for classes?

DART times start during freshmen spring registration…DART times are the time that you can begin to register for classes, once you start to register your own classes and not have your advisor help you. For each class, registration is held over two days with DART times every 10-20 minutes. So if you get the second day, your options are limited, though they try to rotate it so you have the same number of day one and day two registration over your time at ND but that always doesn’t happen.

As I recall, DS#1 got none of the seminars he chose. The advisors are trying to make sure that each student gets the necessary math, science, and other “regular” courses into their schedule, and the university seminar ends up getting slotted in based on schedule constraints more than anything else. So we spent very little time registering DS#2 in these seminars.

^^^Agree. Our families experience with university seminars freshman year was similar to that described by claremarie. While DS#1 was initially disappointed not to get one of the seminars he selected, his schedule worked well and the disappointment was soon forgotten.
