university sponsored dorm stuff

hey i was wondering if anyone really orders all of the stuff for dorms offered by the university. does anybody have recommendations or comments on the quality or value of the sheets, rug, micro-fridge thing, and other stuff sponsored by unc?

Along the same lines, I wondered about the "loft bed" rental sent to me in a UNC mailing yesterday. I thought UNC provided lofting materials. This was a metal frame. I wonder why this would be offered for rental if the university provides all you need at no charge? Those who have lofted beds, were the university-provided kits O.K.?

the rug! it's really nice to have it in your room (with perfect measurements) when you arrive so you don't have to lug around a rolled-up carpet. also it's not exactly the nicest rug you could buy, so it's not a big deal to just throw it away at the end of the year rather than figure out a way to drag it home. i bought one last year & i'm getting one this year, too. the beige color is best if you wanna hide dirt and dust.
and you definitelyy don't need to buy a loft.

Most of the stuff they offer like bedding and sheets etc isn't very good....poly/cotton blends, not very soft and from what I have heard and read in past forums not the best quality. There is much nicer stuff available at Bed Bath and Beyond and you can order in your home town (also mattress pads, egg crates, etc) and pick up in Chapel Hill/Durham stores so you don't have to ship or haul it.

You can buy a fridge and microwave for about what they rent them for and you'll have it for next year as well. Check Costco, Sears, Best Buy etc. You can order at home and pick up in Chapel Hill with some of the companies.

As for rugs, depending on how far away you live, you can probably find a nice remnant at a carpet store for less; it won't have the edges bound but it will be higher quality. The issue is getting it there. The dorm my son lived in had loft kits at the front desk; you just had to sign for them and return them at the end of the school year.

One of my friends ordered the sheets and ended up not using them... she told me they were gross. Haha. I like having my own rug, fridge, and microwave that I can reuse year after year. You don't need to buy any loft... you've got to loft the beds yourself.

Does anyone know the website for renting a mini refrigerator, freezer, or microwave at UNC?

Also if someone knows a good appliance rental place in Chapel Hill, please post!

I would recommend buying a small fridge and microwave. All this would turn out to be less than what you would've payed for the rental.

google UNC RHA, and they have all the college sites selling u stuff there. or go to Residence Hall Association @ The University of North Carolina
i got the sheets the first year (diff college) and they're fine. Not the best quality, but the mattress sucks anyway so some nice sheets won't make it more comfy.

This year I'm getting the rug, which is great cuz its sooo cheap and who wants cold nasty floors in the winter? i totally recommend buying a regular vacuum since dust busters just don't cut it and housekeeping won't come in ur room.

As far as the microfridge, i had my own little fridge and a microwave but i'm so sick of hauling it back and forth to school and the freezer is crap so i rented the microfridge. plus my bf stores his giant fridge and over the summer it cost him $70 just to store it. trust me, you really don't want to haul it everywhere, just rent it.

if you need any more help, lemme know.

Actually, I found that an egg-crate thing, mattress pad, and nice sheets helped the mattress a lot. And I have a Dirt Devil which works great on the rug I got from BJ's. If you want to use a regular vac once in awhile, just rent the dorm's.
