University website ratings

Here are my comments on college websites. Feel free to agree or disagree. This is for fun of course, but maybe more worhwhile than some of the "rankings."

Ivy League:

Brown (5/5) Pretty good. I like the color scheme and the graphics/layout is pretty modern and the information is easy to find.

Columbia (3/5) "Columbia" is very visible and the color scheme is pretty simple, but not very fancy.

Cornell (4/5) While the people on the secondary header bars look a little awkward, I think the overall appearance is well-designed, with good use of diverse colors on the page, including the red top bar.

Dartmouth (2/5) The theme is green, but the graphics are static (rather than random) and the menu links look too plain and complex.

Harvard (5/5) Good use of colors. Overall, good colors and graphics.

Penn (2/5) While I go to Penn, I have to rate this a little lower. The content layout is a little unbalanced to the sidebar and the photo textures don't are too big as background "ambient" images. They should use Wharton's site as the main site's layout.

Princeton (5/5) Colors and graphics; good photos. Looks great.

Yale (1/5) Sorry Yalies, but the blue background is too bright and the site is crunched into a 640 px screen. Looks really small on high resolutions.

Other Random Schools

MIT (1/5) uhh what is going on? This looks like the homepage of a cartoon.

Stanford (3/5) Banner looks good, but everything else is too plain compared to it.

Caltech (4/5) Interesting design that fits the high tech nature of the school. Menu design is non-standard and may not be most efficient.

UVA (4/5) Overall, good layout, but there may be too many links all spread through the page.

Northwestern (2/5) A lot of purple. lol. A lot of the page is empty space.

UChicago (5/5) Simple, but design is effective.

Duke - (2/5) too much white at the top

Rice - (4/5) cmon, you like the way news is displayed...

WashU - (4/5) good simple and cool design. it works

Johns Hopkins (5/5) - very pretty picture

bump....this is a cool idea for a thread, people!

Syracuse (5/5)- exciting bright orange and blue, alot of info
Michigan (4/5)- ok..a little too much blue
Ithaca (3/5)-not enough info, boring color
NYU (4/5)- don't care for boring navy blues
Georgetown (5/5)- who cares, it's georgetown

Okay, I'll admit that the columbia website isn't full of bells and whistles, but for students, it's really easy to navigate (as long as you're not talking about the library's website), and everything is well-laid out. I would submit at least 3.5/5

Notre Dame (2/5), all the information is there, but it's pretty ugly and very busy-looking.
NYU (2/5), the color scheme is very ugly, and the whole website'll just put you to sleep.
U Chicago, I second a high rating for U Chicago; it has to be my favorite from what I remember when I applied.

Colgate 3/5 - kinda boring colors but great info
Spelman 1/5- i wanted to fall asleep
Auburn U 5/5- very informtive, awesome colors
Clemson 3.5/5- too much white but very informative

i think schools like Syracuse and Auburn use their schools colors to their advantage, bringing in the oranges too keep u awake.

For such a PR-focused school, WashU's website sucks.

I've only visited a scattered few times... but Cornell's website is wonderful. Tons, and tons, of attractive pictures/tours/info.

And their dining service page - scrumptulescent. Rightfully so, since their food is supposedly the best of the best.

The perks of hotel management....

LSE 5/5 Best I have ever seen
King's College London 4/5
University of Oxford 3.5/5
University of Cambridge 4/5

brown is actually relaunching their website in the very near future (maybe even next week). the new version is really cool in my opinion, but will be controversial because it uses flash and that's kind of unconventional for any ivy homepage

screw convention, flash kicks ass

I like Swat's website quite a bit...4.5/5?
