University will not take Internship Credit

I'm looking into applying for internships, but some mandate that I use the credit toward my degree. My university will not accept outside internships as credit.

Should I go through with the internship? Complete it and then have them send the credits and have them rejected by the university? Does that work? Or how does it work?

I bet these are unpaid internships. There are specific laws regarding what unpaid interns can do in the US. One requirement for an internship to be legally allowed as unpaid is that “[t]he internship, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to training which would be given in an educational environment”. College credit meets this requirement.

What some schools (actually most that I know) will do is allow you to record an internship on your transcript without credit. I’m not sure what department you’re in at BC, but here’s the form and instructions for A&S: http://www.bc.edu/content/dam/files/offices/careers/pdf/intern_credit_aands.pdf

Can you arrange an independent study with your advisor to cover the internship?
