UNL Raikes School or Notre Dame

Hi guys! I'm a high school senior. I'm currently deciding between the above mentioned schools for a computer engineering major. I've been accepted into both and am currently waiting for financial aid from both. I expect to pay $5000 - $8000 for ND and $0 - $1000 for UNL. Money isn't the issue though. My question is about the experience and programs per college. I grew up in Lincoln so I know UNL campus, and I have also visited ND. I like both and can't decide between the two. Can anyone give some advice or experience from either or anything about computer engineering at either school? Thanks in advance!

I have a son at UNL-Raikes who is a Computer Science major. You haven’t mentioned whether you are interested in Business as well as CompEng. If not, maybe you should go to ND. Doing CompEng rather than CS at Raikes is a challenge because of the extra course requirements, and if you’re not passionate about the business part too, you might end up leaving Raikes and getting a regular CompEng degree; if you’re going to do that, then ND would likely be a better destination. But if you want to learn about business/entrepreneurship/ leadership as well as Engineering, Raikes will give you an experience that’s priceless IMO. Good luck in your decision!

Thanks goodncolo! I am mainly focused on CompEng, but would be willing to go into business. I’ll take that into consideration though.

What did you decide?
I would have picked ND for that cost, it’s a bargain and as ND is a “target”, it opens a lot of doors at firms that only recruit at specific schools (regardless of program quality).

Well, MYOS, I haven’t decided yet. My parents and I have been looking into the financial aid of Notre Dame after we received the FA package. It says that my parents will have to pay around $10,000 my first year, but my parents are worried about the annual cost increases. They can barely afford the $10,000 and don’t want to enroll me and then realize they can’t pay the increased tuition without taking a loan, something they really don’t want to do. Does anyone know about how ND financial aid works year-to-year? Online, the ND FA website says to expect increases in costs each year. With that in mind, does ND change the financial package to match the rise in costs or does it not?

Go to Nebraska, have a great time, do well, and think about a “nameplate” grad school. ND is particularly known for engineering. Save the vanity play for grad school. in my opinion it will get you further. Besides…with Ndomakong Suh’s giant gift to NU’s engineering school…there are even better things to come. See if you can talk to some engineers in the workforce. They’ll have better advice than I do.

meant to say ND is NOT especially well known for engineering.
