Unlikely but...

What are my chances on friday (ED for CAS)...

GPA UW 2.8, W 4.3
Rank: 159/588
SAT 790m, 710v
SAT II 720MIIC, 710BIOE, 690WRIT
Lots of ECs and good TRs...
Lived in 3 countries in my lifetime, Perm. Resident from India, currently in Texas. English third language (after Marathi and Hindi). I have moved from place to place every 4-5 years.

Applied ED, visited campus, and went to local cornell events...I know its a huge reach, but objectively what are my chances?

How the heck did you get such a high SAT and low gpa? Was your school especially tough or were you just lazy? If it was the latter, the admissions committee is going to be able to tell...

My high school is the second most competitive in my area. Its also very diverse and very cut throat. I took the most difficult classes available and was one of only 3 juniors to take Bio AP class and the Bio AP exam (got a 4). I hope my good recommendations and great counc. recommendation will help me with the GPA and class rank.

2.8UW?...............no matter HOW competitive ur high school is that gpa is waaaaaaaayyyyyyy toooooooooo loooooooowwwwwwwww.

How did you jump from a 2.8 (unweighted) to 4.3 (weighted)?

seems way too low, especially if your high school is only competitve enough to be second in your area, not even in the whole state, the gpa will most likely KILL you, do you have a link to your highschool?

I talked the GPA issue with the Alum. during my interview (I know it doesn't mean anything but I noted that they have to write a 1500 char. max paragraph to submit to admissions) and she said that I still have a chance due to my SAT, ECs and the fact that I am an immigrant and have moved from place to place every few years, learned 4 different languages etc. It is indeed a very bad situation with my GPA though, despite taking as many Honors and AP courses as possible...

For some clarification, the Weighted 4.3 is on a 6 scale. I am heavily hurt by the fact that I took many easy classes during summer school where there didn't used to be any effect on the GPA; however, this is balanced by the fact that I took more than 1 core class in a subject area per year. (like Physics and Bio2 etc.)

EDIT: I had another question...how much of an effect does being a National Merit Semifinalist have on admissions? Does it offset the GPA a little? I am a semifinalist but as shown above my biggest flaw is my GPA. Its so hard to explain my situation on paper, but basically I do very well in a midterm/final grading system as opposed to a daily(18 min.)/major (9 min.) + final grading system. For example, during the summer school at rice I had a "college" style grading system for government AP and scored a 95 in the course.

I honestly feel bad for your situation, but you should have worked harder, you know that, i suggest going to one year of a state school and trying to transfer if you don't get in this year. good luck, i wish you the best

"My high school is the second most competitive in my area. Its also very diverse and very cut throat."

Sounds like Cornell.

Thanks! Do you honestly think there are good chances for me in the top 25 colleges? I am applying to many of them, but am very unsure about my prospects...
