UNO or Loyola New Orleans?

Ok, I'm going to be a junior in high school next year and I'm looking for colleges...

My GPA is around a 3.2/3.3, I've never taken the ACT but I'm not concerned as I always do well on standardized tests including the PLAN which I smoked. With all of that considered, which should I attend? UNO or Loyola? I'd like to hear the positives and negatives of both.

you should be good for Tulane and LSU as well if your intrested in LA.

Loyola
Pro’s
-more of a college feel (+uptown area will be more fun)
-not a commuter school
-slightly tougher classes
-i would imagine that they’d have much better facilities

UNO
Pro’s
-more affordable
-slightly easier classes
-right on lake (while not as fun as uptown is still very pretty)

I think most of it should boil down to this. Walk around both campuses and see how you like the area around the colleges in addition to the campuses themselves. Loyola will ‘look better’ on paper but I think UNO is still fine and it won’t keep you out of med school or law school are whatever you are looking to do.

If you can get into Loyola, you can get into LSU. That isn’t true for Tulane. If you do well on the ACT you’ll be fine for TU. Louisiana students are AUTOMATICALLY accepted if they have a certain GPA and a 28 on the ACT. I’m guessing you’re not looking at either school. I tend to not recommend LSU for kids who are looking at Loyola and vice versa because they are so different. You seem to want a smaller school close to New Orleans. Best of Luck.

Thanks.

Do you know by any chance the GPA that Loyola wants? I know Tulane wants a 3.5+ and UNO 2.5+ but I’m not sure about Loyola.

I’m not sure, but frankly I think GPA is not as important as long as it’s greater than a 3.0. Even at Tulane, if you score well on the ACT or SAT, they’ll easily forgive a lower GPA. They consider if you take Honors or AP classes too. Standardized tests are the great equalizers.

What do you want to study? UNO has some outstanding programs not offered (or not comparable) with Loyola or Tulane.

I’m having the same sort of dilemma, except I’m already enrolled in Loyola to start as a freshman in the fall. I attended New Student Orientation and wasn’t super impressed with the Jesuit vibe they force down your throat and the cliche-y, pretentious social atmosphere. I’ve lived in a dorm for the past two years at my high school, but also just found out I’ll have two roommates in a dorm even smaller and more run-down than I’m used to (and my high school dorm was not nice, so I’m not just being snobby).

I applied to 12 schools, but for some reason UNO was not one of them. My major is theatre, and I know UNO has an excellent film program and have heard good things about theatre there as well. It recently occured to me that I could pay 1/6 of Loyola’s tuition if I went there, and stay in a much nicer apartment. Loyola offered me $17,500 in scholarships though, and I don’t know how UNO is about giving scholarships/financial aid, especially since I’d be a transfer student (probably the spring of my freshman year).

Does anyone have any information on UNO’s theatre department compared to Loyola’s? Are they good about giving scholarships and aid? Would I be less likely to get into a good grad school if I transfered there? It just seems like it would be smart to save my money now and live comfortably and then go to a really good graduate school.
