*Unofficial* Class of '15 Decisions

thanks for believing in me, mathematicism =)

@Fatum: He is a good friend of mine so he was able to tell who I was.

also… nice job to the stanford admits! i want to apply there at first, but some of the brightest ppl i know (canadians) were rejected in past admission cycles, so its not an easy feat at all.

Accepted to Penn’s M&T dual degree program (Wharton & Engineering). 2250 SAT, 34 ACT, 800 Math ii, 800 chem, 770 bio, goes to high school in US

Xc66266, are you going to international student orientation??

Don’t go to international student orientation. Complete waste of time.

Is Cornell worth the app. for Canadians now that they have used what was formerly Mex. + Can. financial aid money for the entire international pool?

And is Cornell need aware now?

^I thought cornell didn’t meet 100% need?

I think Cornell is need-blind to everyone, including internationals, but doesn’t meet full need.

Why is International Student Orientation a complete waste of time? So, it’s not mandatory as an international student?

Also, to those who are already in school in the States, what was it like at the border, when you tried to enter? Do they generally just let you in easily as long as you have your I-20, SEVIS, etc, or do they send you to secondary inspection, take up your time, probe your documents, interrogate you, etc?

They say it’s mandatory, but it isn’t. The only requirement is that you go to the visa information session, which they have throughout September anyway. Basically, ISO is a bunch of seminars on “The American Classroom” and getting adjusted to life in the US. Completely pointless for Canadians. You’ll also get charged for the extra week in your dorm, which will be completely empty. I roamed the halls and the only people I met were football players, other international students and ITAs.

MajorLazer - was preclearance fairly easy at the airport? or was it a pain? Do they skim through your documents and let you in?

We drove down. Kind of had a hassle because my mom’s name matches someones name on some list…stupid, but in terms of the actual visa there were no problems. I would not worry about that.

Is having just 2 subject tests = kiss of death for Ivys as a Canadian applicant?

I don’t think so, as long as both the scores are good.

Got accepted into the University of Calgary yesterday morning… I sent in my application 3 days prior.

Well at least my safety is in place, so I can apply away :D

Stanford supplements: all sweet and sincere, I think

Reflection
Strengths: my essays for sure! Probably also my recommendation letters, leadership, grades, scores (but so many applicants are strong in those areas). I think my essays were what made me stand out.
Weaknesses: no major awards, no outstanding ECs
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: my essay!
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: applied EA to Stanford, will get back to you on Yale and Harvard
General Comments: I feel very lucky to have been accepted. I think my essay must have touched an admission officer’s heart because other than that, my application wasn’t very outstanding, compared to some others I’ve seen here. I think I could have just as easily been rejected and I feel very humbled that luck was on my side. I love you Stanford!

^lol, is your school Hogwarts or something? :stuck_out_tongue: Congrats though, Stanford EA as a Canadian is very impressive and I’d take the Cali weather over H or Y any day :P

it’s funny that you say that cuz I just got back from watching Harry Potter 7  But ya, it’s pretty much like Hogwarts…we have a headmaster and everything, based of the british school system or something, I love it. I’m leaning towards California too. I would LOVE to spend 4 years there (or the rest of my life!)

Congrats! Runner, are you applying anywhere else?

Yep, Yale and Harvard. Fingers crossed!

Congrats to everyone who got accepted ED/EA/Rolling!!

I am REJECTED from Columbia College. I am ok cuz it was not my dream school. Anyhow, I expanded my safety schools and I am working my butt off writng those d*** essays.

SAT: 2270(R750, M800, W720) one time.
ACT: 34 both times.
SATII: 800mathii, 780physics, 800chem, 800korean
AP: 5s on AP Calculus, AP Physics B and Physics C(M) *all self-study.
Plus, college credits from summer physics research program.
Rank: Unofficially top 2% out of 400.
School: very competitive public.
Ethnicity and Gender: Asian male, which somewhat explains the ‘rejection’.
F/A: Yes
EC: Quite good but not outstanding. 200 volunteer hours, some leaderships, some awards(AP scholar), one magazine article, etc.
Possible Hooks:

 • a physics lover in and out.
 • have lived in Canada for just two years, and my performance is viewed amzaing by my school (and my school only, I concluded.)
 • AP test results from a non AP school.

BEST of luck, everyone!

What’s the deal with Cornell’s fin-aid? Their website isn’t that clear about meeting the needs of international students…They don’t meet 100% need but they give out loans?? I’m confused…

@prjiki: OMG…are you a Canadian citizen? if so, applying for FA maybe what killed it…
