Columbia is need blind for Canadians.

@Viggy: ^was that an answer to my question about cornell aid? lol

Accepted to:
- University of Pennsylvania, SEAS. Major = Mechanical Engineering.
Applied ED
Will Attend.
Reason : I aspire an Investment Banker but I wanted to pursue my favourite subjects Physics and Mathematics for undergraduation. Thus Penn was the perfect choice for me as the One University concept will allow me to study econ/finance/management from any of Penn’s colleges while also majoring in the subjects I love. Also, Ill try and transfer to M&T ( I know its hard but its the PERFECT thing for me). Also, its an IVY.

2) University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. School of Engineering (Preferred Admit to Ross). Major: Mechanical Engineering
Applied EA
Will not attend.
Reason: Got in ED to Penn
For those curious, if I had gotten in rd to both I would have still picked Penn. I know many will will blast me for this but an IVY league education is VERY important to make it big in Wall Street.

3) University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. College of Engineering. Major: Computer Engineering
Applied Priority Admission
Will not Attend
Reason: Got in ED to Penn
For those curious, if I had gotten in rd to both I would have still picked Penn. Illinois wont get you far in Investment Banks.

yes…exactly…

sorry guys.
Wrong thread.

I didn’t know there was an international student orientation at Penn. Is it during the New Student Orientation or during the Preview Days (in April)? If there is one, I’ll probably go still (I’ve been living and going to school in the U.S. since 7th grade though).

Time to bump this up :P

Anyone get into Canadian schools? I got into McMaster Life Science and Western Biological and Medical Sciences based on my grade 11 marks. Now, just need to wait on McMaster Health Science which only released decisions in April (or March?).

Congrats viggy :).

Man Canadian schools are handing out so many acceptances…ppl are getting them from waterloo, york, ryerson, and a couple from mac too lool.

I got into Western for economics xD…wanted to apply for health sci at mac but by then it was too late. Anyone know if Canadian schools allow us to switch majors (before or after we enroll) ?

congrats to you too^

Not sure about switching majors. I assume that you can.

@Fatum: Just talk to your academic advisor as soon as you go to university. Everybody switches their majors in the first year.
I got accepted at Western for computer science.
I applied SCEA at Yale and got deferred. Now, I’m crossing my fingers for Penn (applied M&T but chose SEAS computer science as backup)
What do you think my chances are?

School(s) applied to: UPenn M&T, Princeton, Yale, Harvard, Waterloo Double Degree CS/Business, UofT, Western, Queen’s Commerce

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): W 660; CR 780; Math 800 (2240 superscore)
ACT: Didn’t take
SAT II: Physics 800; Chem 800; Math II 800; French 760
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 94% which is 4.0
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 4/300
AP (place score in parenthesis): Nothing yet
IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load:
- AP Calculus and Vectors and Advanced Functions
- AP chem
- AP french
- computer science (self-study AP) (school doesn’t offer AP CS and physics)
- physics (self-study AP)
- English
- Accounting
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): First Class Honours for Grade 9 piano, Live Green Toronto Youth Award, UofWaterloo Avogardro’s chem exam

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
- Environment club (president)
- Students of Toronto for Environmental Progress (chair)
- 4-H provincial greenbelt youth forum
- Mentorship program at the University of Toronto, French program
- Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award (met Marc Keilburger at the awards ceremony, featured in the newspaper for this award)
- Leadership camp at my school (organizer)
- Piano (stopped after grade 9)
- Varsity soccer (made it to OFSAA last year)
- FIRST robotics
Job/Work Experience: - Summerhill group, they’re a national environmental organization (team lead, youngest employee)
Volunteer/Community service: - Library, Senior home, March Break camp
Summer Activities: - I did a French immersion program last summer and worked a job
- I went to summer school the summer before that
- I went to China to visit relatives the summer before that
Essays: - The common app essay was about my work experience at Summerhill. I talked about how I can express my passion for protecting the environment by engaging in grassroots environmental campaigns. I also talked about how I learned to deal with customers and team members.
- For the Penn essay, I imagined a day in my life as a Penn student. I researched which frat I would join (“I discussed the upcoming Duck Walk for a Cure event with my brothers from Delta Upsilon”), my extracurricular activities (“I organized a movie night on behalf of Penn’s eco reps”), research, academics etc. I hoped this showed interest in Penn
- For the M&T essay, I talked about the Robotics club. Obviously, this activity is very technical by nature. But we also had to raise $20,000 for each competition, and that was the business side. I also had a snow shoveling business back in middle school to raise money for the robotics competitions.
Teacher Recommendation: They were average.
Counselor Rec: She was new to my school and didn’t know me well. Average.
Additional Rec: One of the facilitators of the Toronto youth environment council wrote a really nice letter about my environmental leadership.
Interview: My penn interview is scheduled for February.

Other
State (if domestic applicant):
Country (if international applicant): GTA, Canada
School Type: Large suburban public school
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 100,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Reflection
Strengths: Nothing at all in particular. I just noticed that nobody who applies is an environmentalist like me. Global warming is one of the most pressing issues of this century!
Weaknesses: Poor SAT writing score, not enough awards, asian, not enough APs,
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was deferred at Yale because nothing stood out. I was not rejected because nothing stood out.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
General Comments:
I don’t think I can get into HYP. Right now I’m just hoping on UPenn as my top choice school! I want to work on Wall Street, for Morgan Stanley or Goldman Sachs, in sales trading (hence the computer science / finance programs)
What do you guys think?

I got accepted at Western biomed (yay Canadian safeties!). Still gotta finish that U of T SPF for Engineering Science and the McMaster Health Sci supplement.

tobywashere, just out of curiosity, what was your score/percentile on the Avogadro? I wrote that last year too. Also, are you doing U of T Mentorship this year? If so then I’ve probably seen/met you 'cause i’m in it as well (although not French).

I was 97th percentile for avogardro. How about you?
Lol I’ve probably seen you too at that mentorship reception party.

99th %-ile, and yeah… that very crowded orientation night hahaha. There were so many people there who got EA/ED to places… made me feel bad for not applying. Oh well anyways good luck!

Good job and thanks!

Wow! Congrats to all of you who got into your schools, and good luck to those who are in the midst of the application process!

This is the first thread that I’ve seen Canadians get into Stanford. It gives me hope to get into my dream school next year! It’s probably because everyone here is so nice and humble, and actually doing their activities for the right reasons – because you love it!

You guys seem like great people! I KNOW that you will all do well in whatever you aspire to do wherever it may be for the next 4 years. Again, good luck!
Cheers! :)

bump…any more acceptances guys?

Queen’s Commerce; already looking at rez halls haha XD

^^ starsaligned, what was your average!

For Canadian schools, I got into Mac Life Sci and Western Bio-Med (only other one I applied to was Health Sci @ Mac, but I won’t hear about that until April I think it is). I’m 5 for 5 on US admissions, but no schools are nearly as competitive as Ivys/Ivy-type/top LACs.

Just 3.5 weeks until this thread will surely be filled with chatter :D
