****UNOFFICIAL Class of 2015 National Merit Finalist Thread****

SeattleSue, what HS does your kid go to. We live in Seattle too.

My son heard from his counselor today at school. We’re in the Sacramento area.
Quick question…Receiving Finalist standing is in itself a big deal right? There hasn’t been a NMSF let alone a Finalist at his school for years. When we started the process last September his counselor didn’t know anything about the process since it apparently rarely happens. So, in the email I recieved today the counselor congratulated him but said now we have to wait until March to see if he gets the scholarship. I feel like this accomplishment should be recognized and celebrated right now. If he gets a scholarship in March then that’s just icing on the cake. What do you all think? How are your schools recognizing your kids? Thanks!

Yes. Add Illinois to the list. Notified by school.

@soccermom12 Yes, Finalist is really the biggest part of the picture as far as money goes. As a NMF, your S is eligible for some great scholarships. Have you researched any?

Tomorrow had better bring good news for the rest of us!!! (Almost halfway done with 23 states checking in!)

Chillmom1961 – my son goes to Seattle Christian Schools. Its in SeaTac.

In case anyone needs the link to NMF schools:

That’s what I was thinking. Yes, he’s researched several colleges that offer scholarships. I wish there schools in California that offered the big scholarships so he didn’t have to go so far from home. Baylor and UO are currently at the top of his list. He did apply to several in state Univeristies but we won’t know about those until late March and they won’t come with a substantial merit scholarship.

Can I ask what attracted your son to Baylor? I have some experience there…

@chickadee68‌ I would love to hear about your experience. At this point it’s based on what we’ve read about the school, the literature received and talking to friends that are alumni. He also likes the idea that it’s a Christian college although I’ve also heard that it’s not as strong in this area as it once was.

Which school district in Colorado?

Douglas County School Dist. in Colorado

So thrilled and relieved here in the SF Bay Area that DS got through to Finalist despite three semester C+'s on his transcript (the rest of his application was strong). We were on pins and needles! His school college counseling office just got the news this afternoon.

Well I am even more impressed with our college and career counselor. She left a message for DS to call her at home tonight because she has some news for him and she will be out the rest of the week. Hmmm… Unfortunately he is playing in the pep band at a basketball game tonight. Hope it doesn’t go too late!

This is a large public high school so very out of the ordinary. Won’t be a new state for the list though because, thanks to our own @albert69, we were the first state to get reported!

So happy for all the new Finalists. S’s GC is dodging my emails here. I’ll probably get it in the mail before the school lets us know. They were mailed yesterday, right?

@soccermom12 did you apply to USC? They offer a half-tuition scholarship to NM Finalists. This is not half cost-of-attendance, but is currently worth $23,000 a year.

What large public high school are you referring to, @STEMFamily?

Congratulations to our latest posters and thanks to everyone for keeping the list of states current, espc @PAMom21.

@mesdeuxgarcons, I’m incredibly happy for your DS! Wow, if he got in with 3 semester C+s on his transcript, then that gives hope to others of us. I believe we saw some posters on other threads who were bumped out with just one semester C this year, as in years past.

If you don’t mind sharing - and this is really more for historical purposes, to help those who may read this thread in the next couple of years - were your DS’s C+ grades in AP or Honors, and did he get those grades at the end of the year, or at the semester? My greatest concern for my own DS is that his C (not a +, but our HS doesn’t do those or it would have been) was at the end of the year, in an unweighted class. The class was an accelerated study of chemistry for sophs only, but it carried no honors, no weighting. And my DS did not do well on the final, bringing him down just below a “B.” Had the teacher rounded up, as some did, he would have made the “B,” just like he did 1st semester. I note all of this mainly so that others - either now or later - can get an idea of how a “C” may, or may not, affect moving from NMSF to NMF.

@SparkleMom97, are you following this? We have someone w/a C reporting-in as NMF!

My DD received her certificate from her principal today. We are in Central Florida.

@beyondrelief Your username is very apt for this thread. Congratulations on your spectacular news!
