****UNOFFICIAL Class of 2015 National Merit Finalist Thread****

Losing my mind in Ohio. Son’s PSAT:229, SAT:2200, ACT:32…straight A’s Honors Student. …and haven’t heard anything yet! Keep telling myself how could he not be a finalist.

Easy for me to say with school confirmation @Sooner55, but it has to be a sure thing. We haven’t gotten the home letter yet, and our school only found out Thursday, and we were notified right away. Those home letters are on their way! Hoping for today with the holiday, but reassure yourself that a rejection did NOT come, and try to be patient just a wee bit longer! The end is in sight for sure. Best wishes to all still waiting.

Son already accepted and registered to attend University of Oklahoma. Didn’t hear anything from his school this past week. OU’s scholarship sure would make life easier for all of us. Fingers crossed & thank you for support.

Empty mailbox here in Upstate NY too, and now schools are on break for a week so won’t hear from GC. But, it sounds like rejection letters would have been sent some time ago, so somewhat optimistic.

Hoping for LOTS of “Valentine” deliveries today from NMSC for those who’re still waiting! With any luck, Jimmie has been working overtime to get those mailed out.

@Sooner55, I agree w/PAMom21 regarding your concern about Finalist status. Even though I am the last person in the world who should be saying this: try not to worry. Your DS’s stats are stellar & there’s really no way he would not advance. You don’t have a rejection letter - and it appears that your DS’s school would have also been notified if he did not advance - so it just comes down to waiting at this point (which I know is hard). It’s possible that you’ll get your DS’s personal notification from NMSC today! Sounds like many households are getting those letters - so even if the school hasn’t told you yet, you may get good news today.

My DS & I are headed to OU tomorrow, as it happens, and both of us are looking forward to learning more about their NM Scholarship. We’re also considering visiting UA as a family over Spring Break - gosh, what an amazing NM Scholarship there - but DS is not thrilled with the idea of being so far away from home.

Please keep us posted once your mail arrives, @Sooner55 & everyone.

I’m trying to eat fewer Girl Scout cookies, now that I don’t have the excuse of “stress eating,” so I’ll leave several unopened boxes here on the thread for others to enjoy…

Got the letter in WI yesterday.

Letters came in the snail mail 2/14 in AZ. Both S and D have advanced!

IT JUST ARRIVED!!! BOOMER SOONER!!! Thanks for the encouraging words & good luck to everyone else waiting.

Didn’t see a thread so I will ask here. Anyone know of students putting down “undecided” as first choice? Did they get a scholarship?

For those still concerned and waiting, DS is finalist per school, but we did NOT get the home letter today here in PA. We did however get a letter from CTY-SET asking for donations. Sorry, not happening.

@diffMom, my son still has “undecided” as first choice because that’s what he is. If you want a specific college’s NMF scholarship, then I know you must name that school as your first choice by the school’s deadline. Are you asking about likelihood of getting a corporate or NMSC scholarship with an “undecided” designation?

@Putterer, yes, what is the likelihood. I am curious, though, do the schools “bend” the rules to go after a candidate?

Or is it hard and fast? Anyone with some history?

@DiffMom, I honestly never considered whether the “first choice” college selection had a bearing on corporate or NMSC awards for finalists. No idea. Anyone?
It’s my understanding that unless you designate the college as first choice with NMSC, the college won’t award you their NM finalist scholarship. The website of every college offering NMF scholarships that I’ve ever seen has stated you must designate that college as your first choice with NMSC by a certain deadline to be eligible for that scholarship. I guess there could be a college out there that doesn’t require the “first choice” designation for a NMF scholarship but I’d be surprised.

Still waiting in Marietta, GA. Feeling like the odd man out. Nothing in the mail yesterday, and we don’t get it until 3 PM. Broke down and sent email to GC yesterday, but didn’t hear back. Saw the principal last night at a soccer game, but thought better of ambushing him. Should be almost automatic for my D (PSAT 223, SAT 2360 & 4.0/4.6 u/w), but not celebrating until official.

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! :x

Letter came yesterday in NJ–but had to wait for D2 to come home from Boarding School in PA for her to open–and just did confirming she is a finalist.

Sharing for next year: letter arrived in our mailbox today in Ohio.

Letter came today in Miami! Still nothing from school but that’s to be expected haha.

We’re in as well in North Central Florida! Just got the letter at home with no word yet from the school. DS was also accepted yesterday to U of Florida which equals a full ride here in Fl. for NMF. All other offers now have a large benchmark to meet but I at least can breathe. Congrats to all that are in and best of luck to those still waiting.

Just received the letter in Maryland! Nice Valentine’s Day treat for us all.

We just received the letter in Reno, Nevada! DS is out on a hike so DH and I held it up to a strong work light in the garage and read the words, “Congratulations, you have advanced to National Merit Finalist status”. GC told me DS had advanced but principal still hasn’t given the kids their certificates. =D> On another note, can anyone give advice on if DS is considering changing his major choice from Electrical Engineering to Astrophysics if he should call or email the schools of his possible change of heart? I mean, students this age change their minds all the time. Also, do you know of good schools that offer large NMF awards that offer this major? This is a brand new development and I know we have a lot of experts here (or maybe there is another thread that could have advice on this topic). Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!
