Congrats, @veggylover! Still no change on mine…
Thanks, albert69! I also called NMSC today and they said lists are not final until May 31. I will keep my fingers crossed for a good outcome for you!
@albert69 - Don’t they release winners in two rounds? One in May and the second one later in the summer? Hang in there.
@veggylover @FromMD Thanks. Yeah, I had called NMSC too, and they said the same thing. I guess part of it may be the WSU hasn’t decided yet.
Letter came in the mail yesterday from NMSC. Added to the rest of the scholarships from Michigan State, my son’s COA will be around $400.
@greeninohio - That is about what my son’s COA will be. I have a friend with a son finishing up freshman year at Michigan State. He has had serious health issues and was hospitalized for 2 weeks of the first semester. His health challenges continued throughout second semester. I just want to tell you how amazing teachers and administration at MSU have been. As a result of their efforts and understanding, he has had a very academically successful first year. He has also secured a school research position for the summer and will be a part time TA next year. Your son has picked a winner!
@veggylover, My cousin is the Associate Director of Resident Life at MSU. Everyone I have met there has been unbelievably helpful and supportive. I have a thread in the parents’ forum about how I was a little disappointed that my son turned down Northwestern. The more I look back on our visits to MSU and the correspondence back and forth with admissions and the Honors College, however, the more I think he made the right decision.
Yes, This young man is in the Honors College. He is very happy with his school choice. I hope your son has a great experience at MSU also. Congratulations on your exceptional COA to MSU! You can’t beat that either!
Congrats @greeeninohio @veggylover! Still waiting for WSU to wake up…
When do we find out if we are one of the 2500 regular national merit scholarship winners (non college/corporate sponsored). Is it through snail mail?
Our son received a revised letter of financial aid after he was accepted at Northwestern (Bienen School of Music in vocal performance) that said he will be receiving a renewable NMS scholarship of $2,000 per year sponsored by NU; not sure of letter’s date, but it was in early to mid-April. I’ll post again when he checks the NMSC portal to see if it is listed there, as well. Would be nice to have the official word before his high school’s senior award ceremony May 19 – the first NMSC news release listing college-sponsored winners is supposed to come out May 27. I’m so happy – he’s our second-generation NMS (after me) and he says he plans for there to be a third someday!
Can college-sponsored scholarship winners also receive the regular $2500 scholarship?
DS got a letter from NMSC today which hasn’t been opened but I think it is part of the bigger school award he has already been notified about.
@LeoFireKingdom No, they can’t. Also, @bobjones12345, I am pretty certain that all the $2500 one time awards have been given out. Check the NMSC portal (the osa website) to make sure.
STILL NOTHING for me. I guess I am switching places with GoAskDad - I’m the one who will be waiting indefinitely for a letter or other notification.
And congrats, @deborahb!
Can I be in the running if I turn down the college scholarship?
@LeoFireKingdom No. The $2500 awards have already been decided back in March. If you haven’t been offered one by now, you’re likely not getting one. I didn’t either. If you get a college scholarship, accept it (assuming you’re going to that college.) NMSC will not consider you for other awards if you turn it down.
Yes son got letter thru snail mail in April saying he didn’t win but an honor to be a finalist and other nice things so it was nice that they verified you didn’t get awarded $2500. If he had the $2500 would’ve been subtracted from what he’s already getting from his university, so glad it wasn’t “wasted” on my son in the end. Being finalist is what really mattered.
Okay. I turned it down because I decided not to attend that college (I only chose it because I knew they gave a large award for national merit finalists).
DS received the confidential letter from NMSC today announcing his receipt of a college sponsored award.
Any one knows how NFC selects the final scholars? We thought they would do based on academic achievement, ECs and community services. But the only one chosen here has no ECs or community services and academic ranking is not the top either. Everyone was surprised here! Does NFC make such exceptions? They claim they do not consider family financial situations. Are there other criteria they do consider into?
