Unofficial UNC Fall 2016 Transfer Thread

@TryitoTransfer, Same here. UNCG has the same thing. During my freshmen year, I had so many friends and a great social life. Then when sophomore year came everyone went separate ways. One of my best friends transferred to UNC, which made me really jealous that he was able to have a fresh start. I want a fresh start in a new university with a better social and academic life. Hopefully UNC is the place.

@MarJR15
I heard of someone last year transferring into UNC from Elon OOS with a 3.6, so i think with a 3.7 and 4.0 you and i should have a good shot. As for @chaimtov, i think UNC would be a good place because with a school that size there isn’t one uniform person you have to be in order to fit in.

@TryitoTransfer
That’s good to know… I didn’t know anyone else who applied/was applying to UNC from Elon

Thank you very much for the feedback.
@chaimtov

Hi Everyone. I am looking to transfer as a sophomore from a NC CC with a 3.84 GPA. I am very nervous about my UNC chances because I had a lot of C’s in HS. There was an upward trend in grades but I had a large gap between my UW (3.1) and W (3.98) GPA. My ACT was good (32) and I had (and still have) great extra curriculars.

I just got into NC State, but am hoping to major in journalism at UNC, which state does not have. I want to stay in the area and hope I won’t have to make the decision of going to a school that is not a good fit or doing one more year of CC and trying again for UNC.

Good luck to everyone applying!

Well I am sure you can knock out some prerequisites that you would need at unc if that is where you plan to attend. Maybe Spanish, Eng, math, science, etc.

Since you are entering as a sophomore you can make the decision to stay since the credit limit for transferring from community college is 64 or 65. It is 74 from a university. But NC state is great school and idc what anyone says, but taking classes at university looks to be a stronger candidate.

@jtut2006 you made good points but I don’t necessarily believe that going to a university makes a candidate look stronger…UNC in particular has a program with wake tech cc and other community colleges that will give them direct admission into the school…chapel hill as well as the other unc-school systems have agreements with the state that says they must admit ppl from community colleges…going to a university may make someone think the course load is more rigorous but in no way is community college easy. I get what you’re saying tho.

I know some of you have been analyzing the decision date, so I wanted to pass this information along. I called the admissions office and they said that transfer students would find out on Friday, April 15.

Thanks @jj0996. That means I can just stress out next week about the decision instead of this week.

@jj0996 Thanks for calling them!

@Gowolfpacks18 I did look into that CC/UNC agreement and unfortunately, it is a special program with low income limits, so doesn’t apply to me. Otherwise, that would have been a nice option. After a year of CC, I am really ready for a 4-year school experience and hope I get in! The waiting is awful.

@ftrsimmons hm…the low income situation may not apply to you (or me either since I’m independent) but I’d like to think that because we go to Nc community colleges that it does help because of the agreement…and it is interesting that you like journalism because I do as well tho I didn’t pick it as a major…but I know two ppl from my hs that got journalism degrees from nc and wow it has taken them to great places around the world…I hope we all make it in…honestly everyone here that I’ve seen is so qualified…it’s awesome to be amongst it all. Good luck :slight_smile:

Hi everyone! I just wanted to wish everyone the best of luck and join in on this anxious wait until next Friday. I do though need some input. I’m a freshman at Western Carolina University who will be applying as a sophomore and I know that applying as a sophomore is more difficult because of high school still being a factor in the admission process. UNC is where I see myself growing as more than just a student, but as a person as well. So, if anyone could “chance” me, or give me some insight on what they personally think. I keep hearing everyone say “oh, you’re going to get in.” but they said that about NC State (where I also applied) and I got denied and I’m thinking it’s because I didn’t take Calculus, but Pre-calculus instead. But, here’s my info. Thank you!!

Currently at: Western Carolina University
College GPA: 3.525
Year: Freshman, applying as a sophomore
Major: Biology with a pre-med concentration
HS GPA: 3.9 weighted
ACT: 25

Extra Curricular: HS
4 year, Track and Field athlete, captain junior and senior year, as well as being awarded the Team Before Self Award
Cheerleader my junior year
Peer Mentor over the summer of my junior year
Involved in SGA
Member of the spanish club

College:
First Generation College Student

Volunteer at clinic
Treasurer of the Latin Association Student Organization
Member of the Freshman Leadership Institute
Member of Intramural Soccer
Dean’s List
Admittance to several honors societies

I also have had a job since January of 2014

Sending in 2 letters of recommendations from my Chemistry Professor and one from my Leadership Professor, who is the head of the department.

My essay was about how I didn’t strive to be the best student that I can be in high school, and instead focused on track and field. That resulted in me receiving a partial scholarship to run at WCU, which is why I did choose to attend WCU. The summer before I left for college, I chose to turn down my scholarship in order to focus on school and be a better student. I hate that I didn’t live up to my full potential, so I decided that “I’m not late to the party, but right on time”. I also dealt with a lot of family issues (divorced parents, split family) and since I’m a first generation college student, they didn’t put any stress on the importance of school so I’ve guided myself throughout basically life.

@hopefulapp43 wow you should have a good chance at UNC. That sounds like a really good essay. I wish you luck

@Gowolfpacks18
What particular program does UNC have with community colleges? You said, “'that will give them direct admission into the school.”
I want to know more

Thanks!

@Kinkarn it’s called “c step”…its for low income students/families…you of course have to maintain a certain GPA but once you earn your associates it is safe to say you are in the unc door…but I was basically saying that just because a person doesn’t attend a university doesn’t make them less competitive than a person who does based on this and the fact that nc colleges have to admit community college students to at least one of the 16 unc schools.

@kinkarn just adding on…according to unc on their website regarding this program…“Talented low and moderate income high school and community college students are guaranteed eventual admission to Carolina if they are admitted to and complete the community college portion of the program successfully”

Unfortunately it is only about 9 community colleges that have this particular program…but still nice to know. And just adding on again to what I said earlier…if unc will accept someone from this program with a 3.2 then I would think they would accept many other people from community colleges as well that aren’t under that program. Just my thoughts tho.

Has anyone contacted the admissions office to ask about when our decision date should be released?

I saw decisions for the last few years were pretty much around April 9th-10 so I don’t think they’re gonna release soon until this Friday or next Monday

@hopefulapp43 Someone already contacted them. We will get our decisions next Friday.

oh gosh, I’m nervous! Thank you!!
