Unofficial UNC Fall 2016 Transfer Thread

Jdrew - I definitely understand your plans and think UNC could be a better match. I hope to major in philosophy and minor in cognitive science (to eventually go to law school)…I know that nc state is known for research/interning so I would love to see what they could do for me there…I think I’d honestly be happy at either school, though.

Gowolfpacks18-Oh yeah I took one philosophy class at state, and it was a really great class. I think nc state or Carolina would be great for what you’re planning on. I really hope you get into both. Have you thought about Campbell university though? I know they have a really good pre-law program

Jdrew - I hope the odds are in your favor as well  I haven’t thought about Campbell but perhaps I should check it out?? I’ve also been told that nc central is pretty good also. Like many people here I am trying to get the most bang for my buck…I know that Carolina promises to meet all needs and I thought I read somewhere that state can be generous also…btw for you and anyone else who reads the fasfa/css priority deadline is steadily approaching! I hope everyone has made preparations to do it

anwarshingh68-
It’s hard to say. The average college GPA of a UNC transfer is 3.7. However, 3.44 is certainly not bad. It would likely come down to your high school stats, extra curricular, etc. I would HIGHLY recommend getting letters of recommendation from a professor. I was told by admissions that a good LOR can really help people who might be on the line.

School: NC State
Year: Freshman
GPA: 3.5
High School GPA: 3.7 unweighted, over 4.0 weighted
Major: Public Policy (Im thinking at least)
SAT: 1880
Extra Curriculum: Currently I still volunteer for habitat for humanity, a local animal shelter, and coach a recreational field hockey team. I used to help teach faith development and played field hockey and soccer. A few other things from high school as well. Made deans list this past semester, should make it again this semester.
I think I have 2 really good essays, but UNC could view them differently I guess
I have a sister that currently attends, not sure if that matters for transfer students.

This is the only school I am applying to and really hope it works out!

Please let me know what you think my chances are!!!

Hey guys! How are we all doing with the applications?

I have a 3.25 goal and I’m out of state engineering student changing my major. What are my chances? Applying as a Junior.

School: NYU (Tisch for Film Production)
Year: Sophomore, transferring as a Sophomore next year (too many credits will likely not transfer bc film school lol)
State: NC
College GPA: 3.85
Intended Major: Anthropology, Public Health
HS (Northeast, very good public school) GPA: 4.07 weighted, 5 APs, honestly didn’t work to my potential in HS. the college structure suits me better.
SAT: 2150; SAT II: Bio-E 760, Math I 710, 5s on AP US, AP Bio

Recs: from bio-anthro professor and editing prof

CA Essay: Had a lot to say about why I’m switching my major AND transferring schools, but I’m pretty happy with my phrasing, content, and the essay’s structure

Supp: Chose the “wisdom” prompt; confident in its originality and logic.

ECs:
– Competitive Club Ultimate Frisbee Team
– Nationally Qualified 57kg weight class Powerlifter (strength sport kind of like olympic weightlifting)
– Photojournalist and Writer for The Odyssey (online newspaper, cross-college); tend to produce scientifically minded pieces i.e. the physics behind the swirls of cream in your morning coffee; exercise and the brain
– College radio host freshman year: wrote and hosted classical music show heehee
– had an internship fall semester as a production intern at a doc production company
– volunteer as an inner-city public school financial aid educator and mentor

Best of luck, y’all!

Does anyone know if applying to UNC your senior year of high school will affect your chances of getting in?

@futuretarheel I would say that it shows that you have genuine interest in the school. It may help you if you’re borderline with someone else who has the same exact stats. I don’t know if they consider interest, but it surely won’t hurt your application.

@eespos1 thank you so much for responding! I applied my senior year and ended up getting waitlisted so I accepted at nc state. I am very unhappy with my current situation, and i now realize that unc is my dream school. Hopefully it’ll help!

Excited but nervous that the deadline is here! One step closer to decisions…hoping that we all become tarheels!!

And now we wait

When do we get our connectcarolina accounts?

Anwarsing - when did you submit your application?? When I submitted my application in its entirety, I was sent a link to set up an account about a day later. You can also contact them if it’s been over a few days…hope this helps

I was sent an email about reporting courses and to go to my ConnectCarolina account to do so, but I haven’t received a login yet, so I think admissions still has emails to send out regarding that.

Does anyone know how much OOS matters for transfers compared to HS seniors?

OOS has no effect on transfer admissions just high school admissions.

That’s awesome, but how do you know?

I asked the admissions officer during one of the consortium, and he told me that the OOS cap doesn’t affect the transfer applicants.
