I am new here and so happy to have found this forum!

My S is a Jr. and plays football. We are going on a road trip this summer and planned to stop at several colleges. Has anyone done unofficial visits over the summer? Just wondering if coaches are normally available etc.

Also what is the protocol for requesting an unofficial visit? Do we email the head coach, position coach, recruiting coordinator? We are new to this whole recruiting process and it is a bit overwhelming to say the least.

FoR Track we emailed the coaches to ascertain their interest and, when they indicated interest, gave them our draft dates. Had to make a few changes but met them all.

Welcome to CC FB MOM There are a few of us who have done the football recruiting here on CC. What level of play are you looking at? DI,II,III, Ivies? Check the schools you are interested in,fill out their prospective athlete forms online and then email the head coach introducing yourself etc., send a highlight film.Has your S received letters from any schools. Because you should refer to those in your emails. We concentrated on NESCAC s, DIII schools, strong academics. These schools had prospective recruits days which may or
may not have included a camp. During the prospective recruits presentation the coaches explained the recruiting process and talked about their programs. Many, many players
attend. If the school also does a one day camp then they have the ability to see your S perform.

These camps/recruiting days began in the spring and ran throughout the summer months, occurring on a Friday,Sat or Sunday.

thanks for your quick replies. how did you find out about the prospective recruit days?

He would love to play DI but is also being very realistic and just wants to play football at the college level. We have sent info to DI and DII schools and need to look into DIII schools as well as NAIA. The Ivies are out due to location - he does not want to go that far away.

S has rec’d questionnaires in the mail as well as filled out questionnaires online. Heard back from a few requesting transcripts and highlight film which we sent in.

also just registered on berecruited.com and paid for the deluxe membership.

FB Mom: Some schools list Prospective recruit days on their website,or some will send out an invite flyer or include an invitation in an email once you have made the initial contact with them and are on their email list.

Prospective recruit days have a lot of people, and I always went on my own. Whoever your son has been in contact with from the school is who he should email about his visit. Typically he’ll meet with them, but sometimes other coaches will sit in (at least that was my experience). Make sure to have questions, but all in all I found those meetings to be so so helpful when I chose which schools to go on for official visits.

Most football recruiting seems to be done through the film screening process or through coaches viewing the recruits at camps. Most coaches list their camps on the websites and many coaches do the camp route all summer.

for unofficial visits we contacted the coaches first to let them know we would be visiting and asked if they would be available for a meeting. Most times they were or they suggested an alternate meeting with the position coach or the recruiting coach for that area.

What area of the country are you looking for ?

Just some advice: Don’t call it an unofficial visit. Just have your son email and say, we’ll be at xy college, and can we meet with you? Then give a bunch of dates/times. Also remember that if it’s before July 1 (if that’s the same date for football?), that the coach cannot call/text you back. So everything has to be cleared by email or by a call initiated by your son.

Isn’t there a recruting site that ranks all football recruits. Maxpreps or something like that. I know my friends kid was recruited by the top1 schools and it seemed that site was important. And some big clinic in Vegas where all college coaches watched…he is a punter

some we had contact with, some we were in the area and combined trips. We were in Maine for Bowdoin and Colby, so I called the coach at Bates to see if he could meet. We just treated the visits as part of the extended tour and a meet and greet unless my son already had talked to the coach.

Since your son is a kicker, there are camps and showcases specifically for kickers. My son was a longsnapper and they go to the kicker camps. you can google search for them in your area. He went to one as a junior on the east coast. In this one…it was a 2 day camp, with the first day and a half for instruction, the second was a showcase for the coaches who were invited. It was held at Rutgers University and there were Coaches from all division schools. Some kids were recruited from there and some of the younger kids went on the coaches to be watched list. The camp was good and I learned an incredible amount from the parents there, who came from all over the East coast.

maxpreps has stats from the games (provided your HS enters them which thankfully ours does) and then you can see the leaders in different states. I think he got a letter in the mail yesterday based on someone looking him up on maxpreps because his height/weight they had listed is only on maxpreps (he grew a bit since the start of last season).

I will look into the kicking camps - when I looked before they were not near us and were also quite expensive.

thanks for all the tips- I really appreciate it!

i know the Vegas “punter” showcase was important for my friends kid! things worked out for him! he started as a freshman, he’s on a top 5 BCS team. the kids livin the dream!
