Can I skip out on getting school credit for an unpaid internship? All the internship classes that are offered at my school are during my class or internship. Can I just do the internship without getting paid or school credit? Will the company (a major f500) care or check?

Sure. Most do an internship to build up resume. The employer cares less unless you are an international student which requires additional paperwork.

but the employer asks that I get internship credit. Will they check to see if I took a class?

Is the employer making its decision to offer you the internship based on whether or not you get credit? If so, then you will need to make the decision accordingly, if not, then they probably don't care either way, but just want to know if they are going to need to report your performance to a school, etc. Also, I bet your school is flexible with the internship.. just speak with a councelor about it, and they will probably help you best.

I believe that giving your course credit gives the employer some kind of tax break, although I'm not exactly sure how that works. I've never heard of employers really caring either way if you get it or not, especially big companies--but if they really want to give you credit like you seem to imply, it'll probably be a bit difficult to persuade them otherwise...

On the school's end, though--is there any way you could get credit without having to take an internship class that "conflicts" with your other stuff? I feel like the school will probably be more accomodating than the company, and it's worth trying!
