I applied RD with decent stats (3.85UW; 32 (33 superscore) ACT). No hooks. Haven't visited yet but hope to over winter break. Since I applied I have been inundated with written materials from WashU - and last week I got a call from an Alum who wants to set up a local face-to-face interview with me. Is this unusual? Anybody else get an unsolicited interview? I'm hoping its a good sign but perhaps its just standard for WashU. Any input appreciated.
Thanks

I would not take it a a sign that you are “in”, but if you decline the interview invite, it will decrease your chances I think.

How is it unsolicited? You applied, right? My son got an alumni interview from WashU after submitting just the first part of the application. It is ormolu.

Meant to say it is normal. Also they inundate everyone with marketing materials.

This is standard for many colleges. It’s typically just an informal “interview” which primarily gives you the chance to ask the person questions about the school and their experiences there. The interviewer will write a brief statement about you which will be included in your application, but it won’t make or break your chances. You should definitely do it.

It’s standard.

Thanks. My question arose because other schools I applied to require the applicant to request an interview. I now understand that it is standard at WashU – too bad, wishful thinking that I was standing out from the crowd! Of course, I will do it and use it as an opportunity to express my great interest in WashU.

Related question - I applied ED to another school. I would not plan on volunteering this information – but do you think the interviewer will ask me this specific question? Or, do you think that they would expect me to volunteer it - not sure what the standard approach is for this scenario.

If they don’t ask, then there’s no problem. If they do ask, just say you didn’t apply ED to any school.

I wouldn’t lie like Ravn is suggesting.

They probably won’t ask you if you applied ED anywhere- they may ask you what other schools you are looking at.
Listing the school you applied to ED (and answering honestly) as a school you applied to is fine.

I doubt they’ll ask if you applied ED anywhere. If they ask what other schools you are interested in, list it with the others. If they specifically ask you if you applied ED, I’d tell the truth. I honestly don’t think it will make any difference in your admission decision.

I had my interview today, very relaxed and laid back, totally different than my duke interview which seemed much more formal in comparison. He only really asked me a few questions; I asked most of the questions, as I didn’t know much about the school and wanted to learn more about it.

You were wise to participate in the interview; it clearly does demonstrate interest. Wash U is one of those that you should visit, if at all possible. We were absolutely amazed by the campus, faculty and students. It made all the difference for my daughter (went from a passing interest to number one on her list). I know they market that they are “friendly” given their location in the midwest, but I must say the people were genuinely VERY friendly (including in restaurants and shops around the campus, not just the admissions crew). It really was different from our area (Southern California). Good luck!

I’m a student at WashU and also from Southern California. The difference in demeanor is astounding.

I am also from So Cal. At the risk of giving So Cal a really bad rep, I totally agree with MarinaOne and musicalscientist! Very refreshing atmosphere at WUSTL!

You are a great candidate for WashU. You have a great chance of getting in.
