Previously, I had sub stafford's as part of my package. After outside scholarships were factored in, getting rid of my student contribution, they also lowered my parent contribution and gave me maximum loans (as I asked for everything I could get). However, it turns out that all of the loan I have now (5,500) is unsubsidized. I thought you could only get 2000 unsub? And isn't this kind of weird? If anyone could give some advice it'd be greatly appreciated

The maximum total Stafford loan (subsidized and/or unsubsidized) for a freshman is $5500. The entire loan can be unsubsidized if there is considered to be no 'need'. If there is 'need' the maximum that can be a subsidized loan is $3,500. So if you qualify for subsidized you can have up to $3500 in unsubsidized (depending on need) and the balance in unsub to make a total of $5500.

So 0-$3,500 may be subsidized (depending on need). Up to $5500 may be unsubsidized.

Your scholarships must have reduced your need enough that it was met. The unsubsidized loans are not actually meeting need - they are replacing family contribution. That's why they aren't subsidized (sub. can only be awarded to meet need).
