I am trying to decide whether my D should take the $2,000 unsubsidized Stafford loan offered this year. She has sufficient FA and scholarships without it, and will result in a credit towards next year's tuition. I'm torn because we have a precarious financial situation whereby we may not be able to put aside as much money for next year's tuition. Also, how do you go about paying the interest on the unsub loan? Any other parent thoughts?

My son got a statement in December for the "year" (which was really August - December). It showed the accrued interest and had a payment coupon. My husband and I paid the interest and intend to do so each year. We insisted our son accept the unsubsidized loan because it gave him "skin in the game" and gave my husband and I alittle tiny bit of breathing room. We did the same thing for this year (his sophmore year) and will do the same for the next two kids. Over three kids and 12 years of college it will defer quite abit of money if we decide that ultimately we will make the payments for them (we've made no promises to the kids). This is just one person's rationale.
