Hey guys, I have a strange problem that I can't seem to find an answer to...

Last summer, I moved in with my sister and her family to get away from the messy divorce of my parents back in California. My head was not anywhere near school or my plans/goals. All I could think about was getting out of that house.

I decided moving to Las Vegas would give enough distance from the drama and allow me to re-establish myself academically. It stopped the bleeding and got me to focus on school (what I was supposed to) instead of my parents' problems and my personal distractions. I made it into an Honors Society here.

Here comes my dilemma.

Now that I'm getting closer to accomplishing my General Education, I want to transfer into a UC school in California. But I don't know where my residency is right now. I pay rent to my sister and still have my California drivers license. In addition, I still pay taxes and have my address in California. I was not required to change anything since I'm only studying here and not working in Nevada.

I just don't like the idea of UNLV and UNR being my only choices for descent tuition rates (something we didn't think about).

I have not yet been in Nevada for a complete year, so I am not even a resident here. I feel like I don't have a home state! Like purgatory for moving.

I'd officially become a Nevada resident around late August. There has been talk of me moving back to California before that time expires just because of tuition.

Am I 'technically' still a California resident?

Where did you go to high school? If you graduated from a California high school, and had attended California high schools from your sophomore through senior years then you were a California resident when you left to continue your education in Nevada. You don’t usually become a “resident” of a state while you’re going to college, which I’m assuming that you’re doing – at least “technically”.

You can always send a note to the UCs to which you’re likely to apply, and ask.

fogcity, thanks for replying.

I went to high school in California.

I had a talk with my sister and she said I’m still a California Resident until late August. She said I won’t be or I could “petition” to be a Nevada resident after that time.

The application process for transferring begins in September. I am deciding whether I should stay in Nevada and transfer from this current CC or move back to California and transfer into a 4-year from there before August. Will moving back to Cali be better? I know it’ll keep my resident status, for sure.

Transferring into the UC’s and CSU’s are difficult, I would advise attending a CC in CA for a year and getting all the pre-reqs you need. If you do not have what the CA schools require they will not admit you.

Until you meet the standards for independence under the federal regulations for FAFSA, your residence will almost certainly be based on where your PARENTS live. Work your way through the FAFSA, and determine which of your parents would be considered to be custodial for that purpose. That parent’s residence is what matters.

Here is the link to the paper version of the formula, it might be easier for you to read through than the FAFSA website itself: http://www.ifap.ed.gov/efcformulaguide/attachments/101310EFCFormulaGuide1112.pdf

Good luck!
