Unsure

I am going to be a senior in high school next year and I am unsure of what I want my major to be. I want to pursue a career in film, but mostly a behind the scenes, video editor.

Radio-Television-Film majors prepare you for that kind of field. What schools are you looking at?

FSU and NYU are the ones I am looking at first but JMU is my in state choice

FSU and NYU are very selective film schools with low acceptance rates. I don’t know what JMU stands for. You might look at also applying to some schools with higher acceptance rates as safeties. My son had excellent grades, excellent SAT scores, and had won some awards for his high school films, but he didn’t even get an interview at FSU. He didn’t apply to NYU. He got into Chapman and is very happy with the film school there.

Another thought is that if you are interested in something really specific like editing, you can buy one of the industry-standard software packages (like Avid) and some books and learn to do that on your own. You could major in something completely different in college and work on your editing on your own. After you learn the software, there are always low-budget independent films being shot that would love to have an editor they didn’t have to pay. If you get a lot of practice, you can get really good.

In a college film production program, you might only have 2 or 3 editing courses, even if that is your specialty.
