I'm planning on pursuing both choral music education and piano performance as undergrad in Texas. The University of North Texas is known across the board as a very fine music school, while the University or Houston also offers a challenging program. Can anyone out there speak to these two schools' musical strengths or weaknesses, quality, music ed programs, or choirs? My impression is that UNT is more prestigious but the U of H is nothing to sneeze at either. What do y'all think?
Thanks!

The two schools are a huge contrast but not so much in the academnic sense. More Denton vs. Houston. Do you have any strong feelings one way or another on this issue. That may provide the an answer. What are your plans after undergrad. If it is to go into music education at the pre-college level, either school will get you there if fine form. If it is to go to the best possible grad school, UNT has an edge. If it is to be a concert pianist, your talent and technique will rule the day. But at either school, you will need to be an outstanding student. I can’t comment on choirs though. UNT has a stronger national reputation whereas U of H has more of a reputation albeit very strong.

Thank you for your response! I am planning on either teaching at the elementary school level or teaching choir at the high school level. I do NOT intend to become a professional pianist, though I would like to attain the highest level of achievement that I can. I would like to pursue a masters later on though, so do you think UNT would be a more recognized program? I live in Dallas and like the idea of living in an urban or suburban setting close to a big city; obviously Denton does not attract me that much. Is anyone else familiar with these two schools music ed programs?

I know more about regular VP at both schools and each comes highly recommended. Why not contact the directors of each music ed program and ask to meet and sit in on chorus classes to get a feel for the level of teaching? Be very frank about your goals and inclinations. When D was an undergrad, I visited each with her and found that they are both friendly schools and both are interested in getting solid, focused students. In short, both schools are good choices and you may just have to go with your gut feeling after an extensive visit.

I can’t speak to U of H’s department size. UNT is very large. Musicamusica’s advice is sage and should be undertaken by every student considering music schools. If you plan on staying in the Dallas area, the schools are full of UNT grads.
