I am a current UNT student. I am in the honors college and working in a research lab. I am an Emerald Eagle and am hoping to become a McNair scholar. I am a computer science major but I don’t feel like i am learning what I know I should be in order to progress (I want to get my PhD) because I currently have an awful CS professor and it seems there are a lot of bad professors in the department in general. I haven’t learned anything all semester and it’s really giving me anxiety. I am giving it another semester but I am keeping my options open and looking into transferring. I don’t want to be sub par because I spend most of my time grasps at fringes trying to piece together enough information to get my assignment done, not really understanding what I’m doing. I don’t want to leave my lab but if I have no other choice I will, there’s no point in staying if I can’t become a good computer scientist. I have heard UTD is very academic and not really much of a party school which is fine because I am not a party person. I am very keep to myself. How is UTA vs UTD for computer science? I am very interested in research so if I transfer I will definitively try to get into a research lab. I also would like to live off campus. What is that like at those schools? Is it affordable to live off campus? Are the areas that the schools are in walk able or do you need a car? Is there public transportation? Also, should I stick it out and stay here?
UTD has a solid CS department. When we lived in Dallas, my husband recruited CS majors from UTD and was impressed with their program.
There is public transportation available in the area. The shuttle bus that runs through campus goes to one of the main hubs and you can catch buses for all over the city from there.
UTD is not a party school. Two of my kids have gone there and they really liked the atmosphere. Neither of them were in CS though. One was in ATEC (arts and technology) and the other in speech pathology.
There is affordable housing on the bus route. My kids have only lived on campus though. If you are willing to live in the dorm, you can almost always get on-campus housing. The dorms are 3-bedroom suites. My daughter only has one suitemate this semester, so they have an empty room. The apartments are full though.
UTA CS program is housed in the College of Engineering which is one of the premier engineering colleges in Texas. The engineering building is practically brand new and is full of many state of the art resources. And if you do an independent study on Linkedin, you’ll find that most of the computer scientists in North Texas are in fact UTA graduates so being affiliated with the school can potentially help with job opportunities … UTA is a very STEM heavy school and growing at an unprecedented pace. @cricket96
