Oh alright. But will it actually take 16 weeks?
Paper return processing takes 4-8 weeks. Not sure if amended returns take more time. Your issue will be FAFSA DRT verification but maybe colleges can issue provisional finaid packages without it. You have no choice anyway.
My mom says if it’s not possible then let’s not do it…
Are you sure it’ll work out?? I’m so worried. I don’t wanna get into my dream college and not be able to attend because of this.
Your mom is afraid to cause troubles for her employers. She is even ready to leave 3K+ on the table.
The way her return was filed your FAFSA may fail DRT verification anyway because of Filing Status mismatch.
Plus it is incorrect as she cannot put income from work on line 21. Plus she now has no employment income and this will trigger additional questions from Finaid. The best way to resolve this situation is to show her earning as self-employment on schedule C, correct filing status and take EITC. Then you will have to deal with missing forms 1099 but it is not your mom’s fault. After your mom files corrected return you will have to call all colleges that required CSS Profile, explain the situation and ask them if they want Profile corrected and what to do about missing 1099s. FAFSA you will eventually correct using DRT.
I do not know where you applied but Finaid Offices at the most generous need-blind colleges are usually very helpful and accommodating - they will work with you.
Give your mom a big hug and kiss, and tell her that you will hold her hand while she works through her taxes with the VITA volunteer. Please, please, please go see them and get the tax things sorted out. The volunteers can help you with all of it. Remind your mom that it looks very much like she will get some money back from the US government for this year and/or past years. And as you both know, she could really use that money.
This has precious little to do with the financial aid package. The information that the financial aid offices have right now is enough for them to work with. If they want you, they will be able to make any fine-tuning necessary in your aid package that would result from changes in your mom’s tax returns.
Great, thanks guys. I didn’t use DRT when I filled out FAFSA. And wow, I’ll need to contact a lot of colleges…I’ll have to upload/send the amended tax returns right
CCDD…this student hopefully is applying to schools that meet full need.
Being need blind simply means that her ability to pay will not be considered when her application for admission is considered. Most colleges are need blind for admissions. Need blind is an admissions thing, not a financial aid thing.
Regardless, the financial aid office should be willing to work with this student to get the info needed should verification become a happening.
Just gather up everything you can find - old returns, bank statements, any 1099s you did get and take it to the VITA office. Believe me, they have seen much much worse! They will help you. Even though you have to send it in and it might take 10+ weeks, you’ll have the paper copy to send to the schools. If you get $3k plus for each of the last few years, that will really help you.
Yeah, most of the schools I’ve applied to meet full need. Okay great, my mom has W-2 from 2012. I wonder why she didn’t get the refund before? Is it because of the filing status?
What are your stats - GPA and test scores? Where did you apply?
A lot of the schools I’ve applied to are reaches, but my stats are okay…(They’re not bad)
OP, you could not use DRT when you filed FAFSA unless your mom’s return was fully processed.
@thumper1, I am very familiar with these colleges - I did finaid pre-reads with many of them. I emphasized need-blind so that OP would not worry about how this mess may affect his/her admission. It should not. If OP gets accepted to one of them then parent contribution will be 0 anyway. OP, make sure you mom knows that.
Yeah my mom knows that, but she keeps denying that she’ll get the refund back…
How do I upload another copy of her tax returns on IDOC when I’ve already uploaded a copy? And, also wouldn’t the amending take so long, possibly to April/May? What if one of the colleges through FAFSA asks me to verify earlier than that?
This thread - 11 pages long! Are you amending for underreported income or misreported or to get the EITC?
Amending just for the EITC…and I guess in case of verification.
CCDD. Thise need blind colleges might not meet full need…and if that is the case, the mom’s comtribution coild be well above $0.
But at the meets full need colleges, the contribution will be $0 most likely…and that won’t change regardless of the tax filing status and all this other stuff. This is a low income student who, at the right schools, could receive significant aid.
But she may need to document what is on her financial aid forms.
As long as she is able to do so, she should be fine.
What do you mean by financial aid forms?
Btw in my CSS profile, I explained that my dad lives in another country but is supported by my mother. I also explained a lot of other stuff.
If IDOC does not let you delete submitted return then call College Board. For now concentrate on generating amended return. Take your mom to the volunteer office and ask them to talk to her.
Ok. I’ll just leave what has been uploaded for now. Will individual colleges ask me for verification or just IRS?
The goal for the amended return is to fix the filing status and get EITC right?
And also, WHAT IF we are not contacted for verification?
