Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below.

The people we call heroes do not usually start out as unusual. Often they are ordinary people subject to ordinary human weaknesses—fear, doubt, and self-interest. In fact, they live ordinary lives until they distinguish themselves by having to deal with an injustice or a difficult situation. Only then, when they must respond in thought and in action to an extraordinary challenge, do people begin to know their strengths and weaknesses.

People learn who they really are only when they are forced into action. Though people may think they know themselves already, they learn who they really are only when in action. Such is the case of the three super heroes Spiderman, Superman, and Plutoman. All three of these characters find that they really did not know themselves and find their true selves in the heat of battle, in the middle of school, and in a heated argument with a spouse.
The web-spinning spiderman was a stereotypical nerd in school; he was a shy character with a puny body. He thought of himself as a weakling who could not do good in the world outside of the lab in chemistry class. One night, Spiderman saw a robbery being held so he decided to don his costume and serve justice. The shy Spiderman was shy no more as he pranced about, deftly thwarting the criminals. That night he learned that his true character was not shy and frail, but was actually a display of fortitude and dauntlessness.
Superman, with contrast to Spiderman, was a stereotypical bully; he was outgoing and had a tough-looking body. He himself acted as if he was cold-blooded and carefree. However, one day at school, Superman found taht he was actually sentimental. Superman was walking in the middle of the hallway when his friend scared him making him urinate himself. Chagrinned, he ran crying into the bathroom. He learned, in action, that his true character was actually sentimental, not tough and cold-blooded as he first thought.
Plutoman found out who he really was in the middle of a battle with his wife. Since childhood, Plutoman had acknowledged that he was stubborn. He always wanted everything the way he wanted and it could not be any other way. This attitude of his was not tested until he had a disagreement with his wife that turned into a full-fledged argument. In the end, he succumbed to his wife and sucked up his pride. Plutoman learned that, in reality, he was flexible, not stubborn.
Only in action can people determine their true self. Whether the action was in the middle of a fight, in the middle of school, or in the middle of an argument, people will eventually recognize who they really are. Spiderman, Superman and Plutoman all found out who they really were in these action-packed situations. In the case of Spiderman, he learned that he was strong, not frail while in the case of Superman he learned that he was sentimental, not tough. Finally, Plutoman found that he was actually flexible and not stubborn.
