Does having a unique extracurricular activity help with admissions? My son performs as a standup comic at comedy clubs around town. Many of his performances are on youtube. He has been doing this since he was thirteen and is actually very funny.

His grades are pretty good and he has a 2000 on his SAT as a junior.

I am hoping that because his talent is unique it would help him shine in a pool of perfect applicants but perhaps I am dreaming. I don't want to steer him in the wrong direction. What do you think?

Thats fine. Infact, its amazing. Its not unusual, its unique. Thats exactly what colleges are clamoring over, they want more diversity and uniqueness. If they didnt, it would all be filled by 4.0/4.0 2400 kids. That would be pretty bland. Whats his name/stage name? sounds like a funny kid

Thanks for the encouragement but I’d rather not mention his name. All of his friends read this and he will be mortified if I mention his name. He has been performing in Los Angeles at The Improv and at The Upright Citizen’s Brigade. This summer he hopes to get into some other clubs.

The Improv is pretty historical in L.A., I heard Adam Sandler and Chris Rock did a couple of gigs there in the beginning. A bunch of big names too, their names escape me.

Eitherway, he should continue what he loves to do! It sure tells volumes of his character… but most importantly, your encouragement is always wanted! Thats true of any person at this age.

Unless your son plans on pursuing a major that is relatively related to his comedy ventures, his participation in stand up comedy will not be an overwhelmingly influential addition to his resume.

I may be entirely incorrect, but I inferred from your above statement that your son is looking into very selective colleges? In that case, no a unique EC such as stand-up comedy will not off set his 2000 SAT and make him shine amongst more academically qualified applicants.
