Hi, I have an interview coming up, and I have a question that is sort of unusual. Right now, I'm planning on deferring college for a year and studying in a foreign country. This country means a lot to me, as does this program. I'm kind of afraid to talk about my plans in the interview though, because I was warned that requesting a deferral can decrease my chances of admission if I ask for one before I recieve a decision. But this is what I am passionate about, so I don't want to hide it. What do you guys think? And this is not just for Yale, but for other colleges as well. Thanks!

hmmmmm....go to college admissions thread, you may got more responses, this is a strange cituation

I wouldn't worry about it at all. Harvard, I know, specifically encourages people to defer a year if they are so inclined, since in their experience such people greatly benefit from the time off and a change of pace. Then too, consider: if they let you in, they have a free bed for a transfer or whatever, and next year they can reach the class size target with one fewer admit - thus boosting the yield rate!

So I wouldn't be concerned, and would mention it in your interview. Chances are the interviewer will be impressed with your seriousness of purpose, etc.

I don't think it would hurt your chances at all. They allow people to defer a year and you are still promising to attend, so you should speak about what you're pasionate about. Making the decision to defer a year takes a lot of maturity, I think, so it shouldn't be looked upon negatively.

I'm planning on doing the same thing. I want to study in Germany for a year before admission, but when I met my rep, he told me that it was not a good idea to mention it on the application. I don't really understand why though, I think that it would be a good thing.

Yeah, I don't get it either. Maybe it's discouraged because colleges are worried we won't attend?

I really don't know. If I do study in Germany next year though and I don't get into the schools I want to, I will be applying again, so I'll have to tell them then ;)

does this mean you're online right now?

no, because you definitely posted that at seven something and now it's nine something. :(
