Unusual Phone Call from a College

Do you (your child) get phone calls from colleges already?
My child got few calls last week and he even did an unintended ‘mini phone interview’.

The most peculiar thing was that the caller even asked my kids test scores and GPA.
Isn’t it very unusual?

i never had to do it with my school :/

How old is your child? Rising senior? Middle-schooler? The answer is yes, it’s unusual. Usually if a school calls your kid, it’s because they already know their stats. Are you sure this was a school, and not a nosy neighbor?

My child is a rising senior.
It was from a college for sure. He got few emails, interview invitation and booklets from the school. As far as I know, my child never responded to any of the emails he got from the college.

We had one just yesterday. Didn’t ask for stats (they got the SAT/ACT results), but had sort of a survey. How likely is student to apply? Is student interested in the meet-and-greet day in august? etc. Was ok, s’all good. Nice to know he’s wanted.

Was it Bob Jones University?

;)

Sewanee did this to me (I think it was Sewanee, at least), as did a Christian school I can’t remember the name of. It’s not common, but it happens.

I got a similar call from Baylor a few weeks ago. They never actually said they were Baylor but by the time I got part way through the survey it was pretty clear.

my son had a lot of those calls last year, some would ask stats, and then say they would guarantee a certain amount of scholarship if he applied. He’ didnt end up going to any of the ones that called, most were smaller less well known schools.

Lots of schools will do it if your S/D has expressed interest in the school (even online or SAT registration) especially if they fit a certain profile (leadership, community involvement, attended a unique or prestigious summer program).

Calls are often made by someone (often a student) who is just assessing interests and followed-up by students in a unique program at the school, my S often enjoyed talking to students with his same interests.

My son (rising senior) has been getting phone calls for about 9 months from different colleges. My older kids just got a few from colleges AFTER they had applied. I think it’s just another marketing strategy.

Phone calls are from LACs.
I guess my child could be a prime target for being an Asian male.

It feels good to be loved but I hope it does not become too much.

When my rising college senior was applying to college, he got a phone call from Harvard and from UM Baltimore County, which he had visited, but hadn’t applied to, and knew he had no chance of acceptance to.

I think Harvard called because S was a URM with sky high scores (a below 3.0 average, though, so he didn’t bother to apply). UM BC called because of his visit, high stats, and interest at that time in the hard sciences, something they are noted for.

An interesting call my older S got was from U Wisconsin - -a call from an administrator after S turned down U Wisconsin for a less highly ranked school that gave him a virtually full ride. She tried to get S to change his mind, but since she didn’t offer him more money, S wasn’t tempted to change his mind.

I would be vary if a school called and asked for Grades, SAT scores. If they are calling either they should know that information before they call or they know you are strong student and trying to get you interested. If they are fishing i.e. trying to find if you are a strong student, then I would be very cautious. For all you know it could be a marketing firm that is trying to get information and then sell it to every college that wants it.

If the school does not know your information and that they know you are a strong student, then they should approach it as “this is who we are, this is our profile of a strong student, and if you think you meet the profile, I would be happy to answer any questions”.

I am always on high alert when I get cold calls.

The school only knows whatever info the student included when they took the PSAT/ACT/SAT. And the college knows approximately what range of score the student has. The College Board doesn’t release students’ exact scores when colleges buy lists of students.

D has received several calls - thanks to caller id, she never picks up unless she thinks she is interested. Several messages on our voice mail - Harvard, MIT, Cornell College, UMASS School or Pharmacy … Cornell College has been especially persistent - she has received several calls/messages.

My son got calls from a lot of college during the school year. Most of them are small Catholic schools. I think most of the callers are students who want to discuss their college with him to rouse up some interest. They’ve been polite and mostly want to know if he has any questions, and to ask him to give the school consideration as it is a great place to go. None have been so invasive to ask about test scores or grades. More about his interests and what he wants in a college.

Just marketing. I tell my kids not to check that box at the SAT’s, and we don’t get anything in the mail or any phone calls. They just ask for info from the specific schools they are interested in, which keeps control of the whole thing in their court.

My kids have gotten a few calls as well - Cornell College in Iowa comes to mind. It’s no big deal, really … There’s no harm in their learning how to be polite for a few minutes to a caller who means well, even if they aren’t interested!

Yeah, we’ve been getting calls for months. Some were from colleges we’ve visited, but others ( Kettering, Kalamazoo, etc. ) have the same caller id. I assume the colleges have hired a telemarketer to make cold calls. I’ve explained to DD that some of these callers are students and she should be polite.
